Microfiber Towels

Using a lot of towels and breaking the car into small work areas is important as well to reduce the chance of marring because each towel doesn't get as dirty.

YIKES... Costco Kirkland Gold towels for rinseless.

Yup. I had been using Meguiars Supreme Shines for the longest up until just recently when I bought the Costco ones.. It's been a year and half since the paint on my car was fully corrected and after countless waterless and rinsefree washes it's still 100% swirl free:)

It's mostly about using proper technique.

Meh, I've used Costco Kirkland towels for a rinseless on a jet black BMW with no issues. I had always heard they were terrible towels until I bought some and tried them. It was one of those "if it's on the internet it must be true" moments :D

Well all power to you have fun paying $10-15 per 16x16 towel. MFTs towels are made on German machines. Yea they're made in China but a lot of their towels are 70/30 ratio towels and I have both MFT 360
GSM and Korean made TRC 360 GSM towels and I think the MFT are actually a bit better and cheaper.

O I have lots of fun thanks.

I judge a MF towel by how it feels on my hands: many (most) cheaper rags tend to "Velcro" to my skin when they're dry and clean, which I find highly irritating. I relegate these rags to my "utility" collection. The better towels, whether German, Korean, Chinese or a collaboration -- without fail -- pass the "Velcro" check with flying colors. My favorites all-around are royal blue or orange, open pile plush edgeless towels from a place that's not this place.

All that means is that your want a split weave towel instead of a terry (looped weave) towel.

Costco towels are soft and great, but they just don't last long. 10 wash cycles or so and they're not like they were new.

I just bought bunch of the Orange 480 GSM towels from TRC to replace my Costco ones....I never had any problems or complaints about them besides being on the thin side....but I'm donating them to a fellow detailer that's just starting out

Kirkland towels are great for non-painted areas IMO.

I read your post just before leaving the house and decided to bring 1 of these towels with me so I could judge it's quality.

My honest opinion, this towel is plush, it's soft, and I can't find anything wrong with it. It's more paint worthy than my current batch of Supreme Shines which I have been using for the past year or so...

Note: My batch of Supreme Shines have been used & washed many many times. These towels have been washed once and haven't been used yet.

I stand corrected.... It's officially been used once... A few minutes after I took that 1st pic my coffee fell out of the cup holder and spilled on my seat! :o That's the 1st time I've ever spilled a drink in this car. Lol.

Good thing I had this towel! What are the odds. Lol. Btw It worked great at picking up the spill:)

Washed once I like these towels a lot. But the 360s are cheap and have lasted A LOT of wash cycles.

I think Supreme Shines are even worse than Kirkland towels.

I knew you would chime in on this thread.

Who MEEEEEEEE??????

Some of us are lucky I guess. :dunno:

As has been said time and time again... "Find what you like, and use it."

Then again... some people are much more lucky than others. ;)

Great that you're passing them on to a new guy that probably wouldn't buy them for himself. :props:

If you'll get the 470's from MFT, (they are actually 513's) you should like them even better, and they are a good bit thicker than the ones from TRC. :)

The thing about the Costco towels (well the Kirkland ones, not the first one that were more yellow than gold) is they are actually a fairly heavy GSM towel. My measurements with analog 'beam type' scale that'll do .2 of a gram (or less) showed that they are close to a 350 GSM towel.

Now more of that weight than SHOULD be... is in the stitching around the border. Then a LOT of it is in the "backing". This makes them quite stiff overall compared to much better, but similarly GSM weighted towels like the 360's (and the 98%~100% identical Gold Plush Jr's) yet the latter two towels are LIGHT YEARS better in both construction and use!

There can be huge quality differences between two similarly constructed fabrics (yarn quality, construction quality, quality control), and there can be huge differences in performance (for a particular task) between two quality fabrics. For the most part, all microfiber yarns start out as a blend of 70% polyester and 30% polyamide. For most microfiber products (not waffle weave) the microfiber yarn is woven through a polyester backing (ground), at this point the composition of the product is closer to 80% polyester and 20% polyamide, because you have to add in the 100% polyester backing. Some factories will call this fabric 70/30 and some 80/20.

I think Supreme Shines are even worse than Kirkland towels.

This is why I mentioned the Rupes towels. They are thin like the Supreme Shines, and actually have raw cut edges. Although... they (both Megs and Rupes) may indeed be a bit softer overall than the Kirkland towels. At least the edges are better on the Rupes! ;)

Considering the cost of the Kirkland units are what... around 42¢ pre tax (46¢ after tax), buying 36 at a time. But ONLY if you are registered at Costco as a business, which cost you even more every year.

Register at MFT as a business and you'll get the 360's (by the 180 count case) at around 2¼± what the Kirkland towels run (3 x after FedEx gets theirs and no shipping discount is in effect).
IMHO... that... is money WELL spent. :dblthumb2:

Both are 'disposable' towels so to speak. And yes... I'll keep the Kirkland towels in my cabinet, as well as in the trunk... because they can get dirty doing *dirty* jobs, like interiors, jambs, wheels, brake jobs, and oil changes.;) And if I get enough of them dirty (without OIL) LOL.... to make a wash load... and they come clean... I'll absolutely use them again. :xyxthumbs:
If not... then it doesn't hurt my feelings to toss them right away. :D

FWIW... I too have "fun" buying and using towels. Just that I buy (a lot) more for (a lot) less. ;)
Beats paying for someone, somewhere, to buy a new sports car and vacation home with the markup.:)

I just hate it that the 'Korean' towels have become all the rage these days. I mean WOW... I just checked (retail) and they're darned near twice what I last paid.

Good ol' capitalism at work!

(Glad I still have about 4 dozen of them unused.) ;)

I've been using the Kirkland towels at work for years. I only use them on fresh exterior paint and don't seem to have any problems. If I could take some nicer towels to work I would but I have to say for the price, they are fantastic.

Thx for the heads up car daddy!!.... I might tr some of those MFT "470s" on my next order....I'm looking at getting their 350gsm edgeless polishing towels somewhere down the road to replace my supreme shines

TRC used to be my go to for towels but they recently upped their free shipping minimum and I found a local detailer that sells MFT towels at wholesale and a sort of local store that sometimes has amazing deals on MFT towels.

Really like the orange TRC towels. I've actually started using their Everest 800 and 1100 for drying. Their thickness absorbs a lot of water. I can dry a medium sized sedan with just two 16 x 16 800 towels.

Yea, I just kind of stumbled into it after doing a rinseless wash as I didn't have any clean drying towels. I've got a couple of the big purple pfluffle towels and I like the 800 way better for drying at a fraction of the price (albeit for smaller towels). Plus they can be used for QD, wax removal, etc.

Yea they seem to be a great all around towel....I actually prefer smaller 16x16 towels....I personally find them easier to work with and wring out
