The stripes can be eliminated during the spraying of the base. You need to back the gun further away from the panel and cross spray them out. You have to keep an eye out for uneven metallic as the base is laid down. This is critical for polyester bases like BASF's Diamont because after a polyester base flashes off it is flat and dull, thus hiding the unwanted metallic stripes. Once the clear is applied on polyester base you get that pop and the uneven metallic (if any) rears it's ugly head!

ETA: BASF Diamont is an awesome base/clear system.

This is correct. First car I ever painted was a metallic silver, and I striped it up. Later I learned to move my gun further away and be sure to mix it up while spraying to avoid them :)

does this method apply to single stage metallics as well?

So I started on it today....

I got tired of hand sanding so I used my trusty porter cable with a 6 inch.stick-it backing plate

Masked the door handles and did more sanding. I also am filling all of the nicks in the paint using standox 1k

Very interesting and informative thread. I'm excited to see the end result.

So finished painting today..... plenty of orange peel unfortunately...but its a night and day difference. Is there anything that can be done to remove the orange peel from this single stage metallic?

If you have any extra paint you might want to paint a test panel and try sanding or polishing on it to see how it responds.
If it doesn't disturb the metallic part of the single stage paint then go ahead and follow whatever procedure worked on the test panel on the rest of the car.

It would be worth it to go back to the paint supplier and get another pint if you are completely out of paint. Anything to avoid experimenting on the car's new finish.

The above is actually a really good suggestion...

Looks like you used the plastic drop cloth idea for creating a temporary paint booth...

Thanks for the follow-up posts with pictures...
