Minivan: Estimated Time to Wax

Dear Dave

Okay. I'm going with your suggestion.

Do you have any questions about Macs, iPods, iPads, iPhones, Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, WordPress, digital SLRs, and/or photography studio gear? If so, I'd like to help you like you've helped me.
I have used a PC since I started messing with computers. What I mean by messing with computers is to say, hit the power button, change home page, run check disc etc. (very limited knowledge) Would I have to learn some kind of special computer language or something to switch from a PC to a Mac or is running a Mac completely simple for a non computer guy like myself? I don't intend on buying a Mac any time soon and probably won't ever buy one if the learning curve is as difficult as it was for me to learn to use the PC. Just curious at this point and since you offered some knowledge on it I thought I'd ask. Thanks.

Dear Dave

I believe you'll find that all of the basic computer skills will apply in using a Mac. Keyboard shortcuts are a little different, though. I taught Photoshop for a couple of years at Emory University in Atlanta and used both PCs and Macs, and though I never work with PCs except when connecting Macs to PC networks, it was very easy to move back and forth between Photoshop on Windows and Photoshop on the Mac.

If you're interested in saving money on a new Mac purchase, wait until new models are released and opt for a discount on existing machines. It's usually just $100-250, depending on the machine, but I thought I'd toss that tidbit your way since it seems like Apple's products are never discounted. Also, if you have a student or teacher in your family, you may get an additional discount by having him or her make the purchase for you. (Honestly, though, I think this makes sense only for more expensive machines, because only then will Apple's education discount outweigh the sales tax you have to pay when purchasing directly from Apple.) MacMall and MacConnection almost always have package deals that make purchasing from them smarter than purchasing directly from Apple.

And you'd want to get additional memory from a reputable third-party vendor, such as OtherWorldComputing, instead of Apple. Apple was charging over twice as much (nearly three times) for the same memory when I last checked. (Apple doesn't make its own memory. Apple hardware and PC hardware are much more alike than they are different.)

That's some of the unpublished (at least to my eyes), take-away knowledge I've acquired in nearly sixteen years of providing Apple-related technical support for a living. Well, that and I wish I'd spent all of my money purchasing Apple stock instead of computers.

Thanks, Dave!

Dear Dave

I just placed my order with Nick here at Autogeek for the Ultima Elastrofoam and Paint Guard Plus (plus some Meguiar's High-Gloss Endurance Tire Gel and a Cobra applicator/scrubber set).

Thanks again for your advice.
