Re: 1934 Ford Pickup Streetrod - Mirka Abralon Wetsand, Cut & Buff

Here she is after we wiped her down with DP Waterless Auto Wash. The paint looks shiny but don't be fooled, we haven't started sanding yet.

Machine sanding with Mirka Abralon and a Porter Cable 7424XP. This is the same process we used at the last boat detailnig class to sand down a 26' Regulartor Center Console.

Here's a thin, uniform coat of wax. We used all Pinnacle products on this project and for the wax we used Pinnacle Liquid Souveran.

Super job, very nice.

Re: 1934 Ford Pickup Streetrod - Mirka Abralon Wetsand, Cut & Buff

This was a cool truck to work on and very intricate areas to sand, but overall the finally outcome was an incredible finish. The sandpapers were super easy and very durable to work with.

Re: 1934 Ford Pickup Streetrod - Mirka Abralon Wetsand, Cut & Buff

Talked to the owner yesterday and he thanked us again. The truck is in the paint shop getting paint on the bottom edge of the running boards where the other painter (who hopefully has retired his gun) was too lazy to get.:buffing:

Very nice work fellas!

That was some serious OP but you almost eliminated it :xyxthumbs:

Awesome job guys! The orange peel looked really bad and the after pics looked fantastic! Cool truck!

Yeah we almost eliminated about 90% of it.

I don't know about other guys but when I'm responsible for any wetsanding project I like to error on the side of caution and have the final results be called a success rather than me calling the owner and telling him there's been a mistake.

Like my good friend Mike Pennington always use to tell me when I started any project at Meguiar's,

"Here's your chance to be the hero or the zero"

I love a challenge but I also like to finish on the winning side!

Holy cow, that peel was insane!

Is Autogeek going to be selling those Mirka Abralon products, Mike? I don't see them in the store.

Yes.

I've been using Mirka Abralon for about 10 years now and really like these sanding discs. These are the discs I used when I did the wetsand, cut and buff on the Joker Truck.

I like the flow though mesh design and the foam backing. They cut fast and leave a uniform sanding pattern that buffs out easy.

You can use them by hand or machine

Plus these foam backed, mesh design sanding discs were PERFECT for sanding down extremely oxidized gel-coat as we did in the last boat detailing class

We'll be teaching hand and machine sanding in both upcoming car and boat detailing classes....

Marine 31 Boat Detailing Class - Saturday & Sunday August 22nd & 23rd

Next Detailing Boot Camp Class - July 17th, 18th & 19th

These are the most hands-on classes working on real-world cars and boats available.... clear your schedule and get signed up.

Re: 1934 Ford Pickup Streetrod - Mirka Abralon Wetsand, Cut & Buff

It' done. That is the side edges of the running boards have already been repainted and the truck is out of the shop.

What Tim's talking about is when the truck arrived the vertical lip of the running boards had hardly any paint on them, you could see the primer coat showing. Not sure the exact reason but judging the overall lack of quality for the entire paint job it was probably just a case of the painter not getting down low to the ground to spray paint onto the 2" side of the running boards.

Mike received the leftover paint from the paint job when he bought this truck from the builder and had a local shop fix the issue.l

Mike says the truck now looks great and wanted me to tell all the guys that did the sanding and buffing thank you!

Mike also picked up the tab on the pizza. :props:

I know a number of the guys for this project had never hand sanded or machine sanded before and I think a few are still fairly new to using a rotary buffer so I too would like to say thank you for taking on the challenge.

In the car detailing world, knowing how to wetsand and use a rotary buffer are what I would consider advanced skills so good work guys!

It was another great night at Autogeek.

Mirka Abralon sanding disks are nice, last long time and leveled out fast.

See you next time.

Mirka Abralon is available in 6" and 3" in these grades....

I think I would be scared to sand using an 8" sanding disc!

Well maybe not on a boat...

:D

Ha Ha. Misunderstood my question. I wasn't asking if it was an 8" disc. Was asking if it was the 8A Abralon disc. They have an 8A and a 9S foam sanding disc. I have used the 8A discs to remove light OP, but I wouldn't think they would have been able to level heavy OP like on the truck you did. Again, great job.
