I'm pretty sure that no one "makes" their own clay, even under license. Auto Magic or Auto Wax has enforced their patent strongly and they always win. They've stopped tons of importers of clay made elsewhere.
I'm not sure if there is any company out there that licenses the patent and makes their own, because they still have to make it according to Auto Magic specs. It's easier to just buy and label it differently.
Please anyone feel free to dispute me, especially someone who is part of a company that sells clay.
Yeah, we don't want any of that imported clay. You do know that ClayMagic is made in Japan? Because the guy who invented it and patented it is Japanese. He assigned the US patent rights to AutoMagic. It doesn't matter where the clay is made, you can make all the clay you want to here in the US, you just can't SELL it here, or anywhere you don't have the patent rights, without permission/license fee etc. And you don't have to make it to "Auto Magic specs", why would they care? It's not going to say ClayMagic on it. Arguably the reason they took out Erazer and the others is because those elastic clays were better than plastic ClayMagic, which is why everyone wishes they could buy elastic Riccardo clay here. Erazer tried to claim that their clay was different and didn't infringe the patent, but the patent is well written, it's broad, it has over 60 claims IIRC, including clay with every imaginable property.
