Motorhead Garage - Machine Polishing with Pinnacle - Episode 7

On Sunday, February 13th, at 11:30am Eastern Time, and on Monday, February 14th, at 4:30pm Eastern Time, a brand new how-to segment will air with with myself, Dave Bowman and Sam Memmolo on the Fox Sports Network.

Removing Swirls and Oxidation By Machine

Products Featured

Pinnacle Ultra Poly Clay Kit to clay paint
Pinnacle Advanced Swirl Remover to chop out dead, oxidized paint
Pinnacle Advanced Finishing Polish to maximize gloss, clarity and richness of color
Pinnacle Souveran Paste Wax - This is a "Finishing Wax" or a true "Show Car Wax"

You could also use the liquid version, I demonstrated the paste version to show how to apply a paste by machine.

Pinnacle Liquid Souveran Car Wax

I used Microfiber Gloves to hold the wax in my hand as I spread a little over the face of the foam pad.

Lake Country 5.5" Flat Orange Light Cutting Pad - To remove the oxidation
Lake Country 5.5" Flat White Polishing Pad - To Maximize Gloss, Clarity and Richness of Color
Lake Country 5.5" Blue Finishing Pad - To Machine-Apply the Pinnacle Finishing Wax for True Show Car Results
Microfiber Wax

Porter Cable 7424XP - For all machine work.

Speed Settings
6.0 for removing oxidation and swirls with firm downward pressure and move the polisher slowly over the paint.

5.0 for polishing the paint to a high gloss with firm downward pressure for the first 3-4 Section Passes and then lessen your pressure and you can move the polisher a tick faster at the end.

4.0 for applying the wax or paint sealant. At this point of the process you don't need high speed because all you're trying to do is spread out and work in a layer of wax or sealant.

Machine Applying a Wax or Paint Sealant
AFTER you have removed all the oxidation or any other paint defects and then after you have polished the paint to a high gloss you can apply your wax or a paint sealant by machine but instead of doing small sections at a time you can apply to pretty much as much paint as you can reach and cover with your polisher as long as you have enough wax or paint sealant to continue moving around a panel or the car. That is you don't apply finishing waxes or sealants to small sections.

The reason you remove swirls to small sections is because you need to focus the cleaning or abrading action of the polishes to "small" sections or you won't remove the oxidation and other defects.

Make sense?

We show this in all our Detailing 101 Classes

Our Detailing Project
In this segment we taped with Dave and Sam we used an extremely oxidized 1965 Ford Truck and demonstrated The Baggie Test and also how to use a PC 7424XP with Pinnacle products to remove the oxidation, swirls, scratches and water spots and restore a show car finish.

The Camera Crew for this show is also the Camera Crew for our show and these guys do a great job of capturing the action, editing the footage and getting it in the can and ready to air.

They'll be here in the next few weeks as we film our embedded Autogeek's Show Car Garage Features for the TV Show as well as a few more projects.

Yancy has a pretty cool job too... I'll try to get pictures of all the cool cars he gets to drive as we have quite a few lined up for the future and he's in charge of positioning them for each segment we shoot here at Autogeek's Show Car Garage Studio

Re: New How-To Segment on Motorhead Garage - February 13th and 14th

Embassy Suites doesn't get the channel so we drove to "Fox Sports Grill" and alas, they don't get it either.

It repeats on Monday at 4:30pm Eastern time and we get this channel at work.

Dang, was hoping to see it, Dave Bowman does "The Baggie Test".

Re: New How-To Segment on Motorhead Garage - February 13th and 14th

The machine polishing segment on Motorhead Garage just aired a second time did anyone get a chance to see it?

I was out all day working on segments for the What's in the Garage? TV show and it was over when I got back to the office.

It should show up here in the next day or two where it can be watched online...

I watched it on Sunday. It's nice to see some information on the proper way to care for your paint finish coming into the automotive enthusiast TV show world.

Re: New How-To Segment on Motorhead Garage - February 13th and 14th

Got it on the DVR, but haven't watched yet...

Re: New How-To Segment on Motorhead Garage - February 13th and 14th

That was a great segment - the kind that should be featured on Two Guys Garage.

Re: New How-To Segment on Motorhead Garage - February 13th and 14th

Aw man I missed it. Is out there on youtube or any other site?

Re: New How-To Segment on Motorhead Garage - February 13th and 14th

Very informative segment Mike.
That pad was nice and green when you got done. Did they edit out any mention of single-stage vs. clear-coat?

BTW, looking forward to speaking with you again at DF.

Re: New How-To Segment on Motorhead Garage - February 13th and 14th

Mike,
In the three part videos you did for the Wolfgang Twins on the black Lexus, you made an "X" on the face of the pad with the products, but in this demo, you spread the Pinnacle Twins over the entire face of the pad. Is this because it was a single stage paint, or has this been found to work better for the PC and flat pads?

Mike,
In the three part videos you did for the Wolfgang Twins on the black Lexus, you made an "X" on the face of the pad with the products, but in this demo, you spread the Pinnacle Twins over the entire face of the pad. Is this because it was a single stage paint, or has this been found to work better for the PC and flat pads?

Showing the X-Pattern or the Circle-Pattern was a carry-over from the years of teaching classes at Meguiar's at their Corporate office in Irvine, California as that's the "protocol" we used at that time. I taught thousands of people how to use a G100 aka the PC to remove swirls and create a show car finish and all these people successfully did so using an X-pattern or a Circle Pattern. Meguiar's has been educating people how to polish paint as long as anybody and actually longer than most and they've been pretty successful at it using the circle or x-pattern for decades considering they introduced the world to the Porter Cable polisher for machine polishing paint.

To be frank, if you make a circle pattern or an x-pattern and buff a section, after a few passes the product spreads out and 100% of the face of the pad becomes wet with product and even more important... at that point 100% of the face of the pad is for sure working for you.

Priming the pad first just, key word, "ensures" that 100% of the pad starts working for you from the very first Nano-second you place the face of the pad against the paint and then turn on the switch.

Priming the pad is now a method being used and shown by Meguiar's as a part of their new DA Microfiber Polishing System.

The idea makes sense for any type of pad or product so it's now the way I show people no matter what the environment, be it in a class, one-on-one or on TV show or a how-to video.

It takes little longer to do since you have to spread the product out with your finger and then wipe your finger off versus just laying a strip of product onto the face of the pad setting your product bottle down and then going to work.

If you ever have a chance to make videos or show machine polishing on TV, (or any kind of TV work), you'll find out REAL FAST that EVERYTHING is timed to the second. As in minutes and SECONDS, so little things are a big deal and I hope when you watch the portion where I spread the product out over the face of the pad that you'll note I did it very quickly but still did a good job.

Last Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday we were shooting brand new segments for our TV show and the Director has a stop watch around his neck and times everything.

Great question!
