I'm now considering upgrading to the 4S just after seeing the image quality alone. I really have no need for a point & shoot any longer.

I think you are right on there Matt. I am really happy with the camera quality on the 4S, and although I do lug around my enormous SLR when I intend to take pictures, always having a darned good P&S equivalent on you is going to allow me to get a lot of shots I would otherwise miss.

Same here, I have a dSLR and a P&S...one less camera to carry if I get a 4S.

Yeah that picture quality is nice....something my current phone really lacks. I heard the video camera shoots in 1080p as well! This would be good for Mike P since he likes to shoot videos on the fly.

Not only that, but stabilized video ... this is actually a really awesome feature.
Here is a video I shot hand-held straight out of the camera (and I was shaking a lot while shooting it). Titles added on the phone via iMovie, but that's it.

Wow that is VERY impressive video quality for a phone. Even better than my Flip MinoHD. I think you just sold me on the 4S...will likely order a 32gb tonight
Same thing I was just thinking because I just bought the Flip HD right before Detail Fest. Not sure if it will be used once we get our phones!

Don't worry Dave, you're not alone. Shoot, I'm "only" 30 and most of this stuff makes no sense to me. My wife and I just made the switch to smart phones about 2 weeks ago, so I have a lot of catching up to do. While I won't bring myself to be the clown that can't even walk to the bathroom without messing around on their phone, I will admit that it's actually pretty fun to play around with.
Quite simple really, we currently have the iPhone 3G that we purchased when released and have served us well for the most part. The 3GS is a little old and most of the current software is written for the 4/4S. The iPhone 4 had some issues that were resolved with the 4S, and the camera is better with the 4S than the 4, so after all that the iPhone 4S will be the best choice for now and the next few years. Had there been no major changes between the 4 and 4S such as between the 3G and 3GS, I probably would have gone for the iPhone 4. The price of the phone has no effect on my decision.
*Edit - I should correct myself by saying the only real tech spec that I care about is the camera. The rest of the stuff is great I'm sure and people use their phone in different ways and the processor, screen size, on board memory, etc. may suit them for their purpose. I'm not really a power user when it comes to phones.
Sounds good, it was just kinda odd the way it came out in your post, like 'Im getting the <highest tech spec phone> because I dont really care about all the tech specs, lol.

As I read through this thread, on my Original Motorola Droid patiently waiting for a phone to fit what I want in a replacement, I can't help but think to myself...
I understand why you don't talk about politics on message boards. I can even understand why you don't talk about religion for the most part on message boards. After seeing Bamaboy's post, we have entered the place in internet history where you can't talk about any market that Apple is in on a message board. (Not at all bashing you Bamaboy).
I know that there are fan's and haters for every flavor out there, but it seems like the Apple VS. Anyone has some seriously intense proponents on either side of the debate.

Perhaps you should go watch the Samsung Galaxy Nexus/Google ICS event. That phone + ICS just made most of what just came out in the 4S outdated. Not to mention the fact that many of the things that came out with the 4S were just catch ups to Android (as usual) in the first place.

Wait, how is Apple playing catch up when they paved the way for smart phones as we know them today? Technically everyone else is playing catch up, so much so that every smart phone released is always compared to the iPhone.

I believe it is not the topic but rather the person you are talking with. If you go into a conversation with an open mind, the ability to question your own views, honestly/fairly discuss the topic, and be willing to come away with a different view point than you went in with, anything can be discussed.
Unfortunately it has become commonplace that your aforementioned topics of politics, religion (and other hot button issues) no one has any of the required qualities to make it a discussion. What we end up with is people preaching to each other without listening.

I read it more as you want to have the most current technology today so it would have the longest life-cycle and you can wait longer to upgrade again. Maybe I was reading that wrong.

There may be better features on some Android phones, but the simplicity/popularity of IOS and the widely available apps/features seal the deal for me. Plus Apple stuff just works! I'm not an Apple fanboy by any means and I'd never owned an Apple product until I got my iPhone 3G...
