Reaching out to everyone in Orlando, FL for recommendations on where to live. Looking for a safe area, apartment or house with a garage, and within 20 - 30 minutes of UCF on Alafaya. Budget is $1300/month for rent. Moving in May for work.

Hi, I moved to Orlando from Cincinnati almost a year ago and am still exploring myself. I'll send over some thoughts tomorrow, there are lots of options. Definitely an adjustment! Feel free to also pm me if you have any other questions and welcome to Florida!

Thanks rms64. I appreciate any advice that you have.

Hi Rich,

Here's just a few random thoughts based on my experience here in Orlando during the last (almost) year.

If you want to be within 30 minutes or so of UCF, you have lots of options, traffic notwithstanding. I work downtown and live within 2 miles of my office which is very nice- takes the horrible I4 traffic (everyone is either 115 years old or from somewhere else - not good) out of the picture for me. If you don't mind some I4 traffic your options open up a little.

For UCF - commutable I'd look at Oviedo, Lake Mary, Winter Park, Baldwin Park, maybe Maitland or even Apopka. Personally I'd avoid the Curry Ford Rd / Conway Rd / Goldenrod Rd area, as well as Pine Hills (also known as Crime Hills here).

These are just a few suggestions - if you like more of a "country" feel (hard to come by in Florida), then look at Mt. Dora which would be a bigger drive but is a beautiful spot - nice big lake, some actual trees, etc. I'll eventually end up there myself.

For your budget of $1,300 or so you should have no problem finding a nice rental - craigslist in Orlando is loaded with possibilities.

I hope this helps a little - and standard disclaimer - all of the above is based only on my limited experience so far!

Edit - Waterford Lakes is also close to UCF and pretty popular around here - might be worth checking out. It's a giant subdivision-ish thing I believe. That's all I know about it :)

Hey, welcome to FL!! As mentioned previously, definitely avoid the Pine/Crime Hills, Goldenrod, Conway areas. Based on what you said, I would look in Oviedo, Maitland, Lake Mary or even slightly more west like around the Universal area.

I live in Windermere (the West side of Orlando) and have about a 30-40 minute commute to UCF; to me, it's worth it because it's such a nice area.

Good luck and feel free to PM me with any questions.
