Musings after attending a car show

Smaller detailing companies have gone to small car shows. Take Poorboys for example. I really do hope they can educate and win over more car guys.

I have yet to ever see a C6 or C7 Vette with clean exhaust tips. It’s as though dark carbon film was a factory option.

Neighbor of mine with a C6 stops over sometimes when I am working a car and never wants anything from me, rather tells me how he “does his own buffing”. The car is wasted with swirls.

I think the bulk of my problem lies here:

I am offering someone a service that makes their car look better. Prideful car guys don’t believe they need anyone’s help doing that.

I think there are two type of car guys after the build. There are the "I'm going to drive the crap outta this thing" guys and then there are the "if there's a cloud in the sky this thing is staying in the garage" guys. Each looks at the other with a certain amount of disdain.

I've gone from it must be perfect to I'd like it to look good and I can live with a few imperfections.

I think the guys who really detail or have their cars detailed are the World of Wheels type of cars. Cars that generally but not all, are so perfect that they are never driven on the street.

I’m Both of those guys... It’s called treat it like a garage queen, with no space in the garage. Lol.

Clean car for sure

Last summer I flew out to California to pick up a 2010 cts-v
coupe, black tri coat with a buddy and we drove it back to Minnesota. Stuck in traffic im looking at all these vehicles and a lot of them were absolutely stunning ! What im getting at is detailing must be pretty big out there especially with daily drivers. You don't really see that here in Minnesota due to the insane toll these harsh winters take on our vehicle paint.

Did a 2 stg. correction and coated it with Cquartz Uk 3.0

Yes & no... While everyone should realize how good we have it with the weather, there’s still everything else to nitpick about... Cost of living? Or maybe people are cheap? I dunno exactly what it is but you’d think it’d be easier.

Pretty cool Cadillac. Equally cool of you to decide to drive it all the way back home.

•JMO...
-but perhaps you should widen your scope of view.

•Here are a couple of teaser shots of our C6’s/C7’s
exhaust tips—shoot, as a bonus: I’ll throw in one of
the Wife’s C5’s...and a couple of her 3rd Gen. Blazer’s. :)

{Note: I can provide lots and lots more
for your viewing pleasure, if so desired.}

Just to comment...

I've seen Bob's Corvette - and it is immaculate inside and outside.

Bob and his wife came by the Autogeek booth when we were filming an episode of My Classic Car in Elizabethtown Kentucky.

Before we started we took this group shot with Dennis Gage.

Yeah, I've been to a good number of some smaller "mom+pop" shows, where you'll see some rides which could use some TLC in the detailing dept.

Then some others, and as one example a World of Wheels Show in Milwaukee a few years back, and rides where I probably wouldn't even be able to afford the paint job, let alone the ride.

Wait a second........ That’s Bob?!

I always had him pictured as looking like the Skipper, from Gilligans Island. *Mindblown*

Those look amazing. Nice work.

I don’t see attention to detail like that in west Michigan.

Sorry, but...No...That’s not me in that group photo.
I wasn’t part of that particular Detailing Team (I’m
not a Professional Detailer).

(Nor am I nearly as good looking; or as ‘in shape‘
as the Skipper.)

Anyone who's been in Scottsdale has no doubt visited "The Pavilions" on a Saturday afternoon or many of the other Saturday morning venues. You'll find a rat rod sitting next to a Kindig-it restomod or latest Rod Shop creation with everything in between.

It's great seeing both ends of the automotive spectrum with no judgements. Eat a donut and make a new friend is my goal. I've attended with water spots on my car because I was too lazy and it gives my detail pals something to rib me about.

Have fun and smile!

Paint work can cost an obscene amount of money. I saw a video where someone was looking at old cars and found a former Impala show car that 20 years ago the paint job cost $40,000. It was sitting outside and the paint had faded over the years.

I watched a video where Dennis Collins was talking a bout a Jeep he was restoring and said that they spent $12,000 just in sprayable materials, that wasn't factoring in time and labor for paint and sanding.

Thanks for your kind words Mike.

Bob

I was completely shocked..

I guess Im a bolt on and finish guy. I had two weeks time in lining up and perfecting gaps on a drivers door of a Factory Five Daytona coupe. Then after I painted it two weeks in cutting and buffing the entire thing. I posted pics of the mods I did to the door on the Factory Five forum to get it perfect and 20min later Factory Five customer service was calling me wanted detailed pics so they could do a running change in door production to get them better off the line.

To the OP.. I get it. I've gotten to the point where I'm a bit .. jaded? I'm not sure if that's the right word. When people ask me how I get my car so "shiny", I just tell them it's work that they most likely do not have the patience or inclination for. Just like how many people at car shows talk about how high purity their carnauba car wax is not understanding the chemical reaction that happens to carnauba wax when its exposed to a lot of sun and becoming acidic on their paint.. but to each their own. Most people in car shows don't have the technical understanding of automotive paint to know what paint correct really is, and I do not have the time or patience to explain it to them. I smile and nod and walk away a lot. I also don't go to a lot of car shows..
