My 1st correction - How did I do?

Ok, so I have officially started this journey of learning. I am using my 2002 Black Suburban as my test bed. After reading a lot in the AG forum and believing I have enough to get going, I started with the hood. I decided to do a complete correction before moving on to the fenders etc so I have a chance to make any necessary changes if needed.

My setup and process:
GG6 with 5" LC CCS pads
1st I clayed the hood
2nd GG Complete Compound with an orange pad
3rd GG Complete Polish on a green pad
4th GG Poly Wax on a 6" red GG pad

For the compound and polish I made about 6 passes; 3 with what I think would be firm pressure, 1-2 passes with light pressure and the final with just the weight of the machine.

With this being a daily driver, I am very happy with the final results. I am looking for some feedback, critique, comments based on these pictures.

The hood does have a few good scratches that I knew would not come out, which is fine but I don't have enough experience yet recognize what should come out vs what did come out.

Anyway take a look and let me know what you think. All in all it was a good 1st crack at it and very enjoyable, even if it was 100* today.

Thanks
Ron

Looks great. You got quite a bit of those swirls out. If you look at that hood shot in the sun, it does look a little hazy. You might try the Menzerna FG400/SF4000 combo or HD Adapt/Polish (or HD Speed). Reflection shot looks great.

That was gonna be my next purchase to try. I've seen it mentioned a lot.

The haze... I see that now. Is that usually a result of the product, the type of tool or technique?

Play around with some other pads prior to buying new products. A pad change may be all that you need.

:xyxthumbs: Yeah nice work Ron.

As you said - this is a daily driver & IMO its looking pretty sweet. Sure if you wanted to practice more & chase soom of the deeper defects you could but there's no guarantee they'll polish out. I'd say for your first time - great work, great results. :dblthumb2:

The sun on black paint is about as revealing as you can get isn't it :) I'd say it's likely product related and perhaps as noted, just something as simple as needing a pad change to a fresh clean one.

I wouldn't stress about it just yet. Given it's not fully corrected yet, I'd enjoy it for a few weeks then hit it with HDSpeed. Finishes out beautifully and it should take care of the remaining swirls and haze just fine.

Very good job for ur first time....and it being ur first detail, and it DD, those are VERY acceptable results....it's tough with DDs and what some ppl get caught up with is chasing perfection on them....it's impossible, and it sort of drove me nuts a little at first, but u just have to live with some defects....they're part of life :)

Nice job, reflect from carpro will clean up that haze.

I think you did a spectacular job for your first time!

Don't worry about the RIDS that were left in your hood. They're probably too deep anyway... And you already improved your paint finish 99% already so what's a scratch or two. It's probably unsafe to chase them down especially with how intense our sun is here. Speaking of which, I don't know how you detailed in this heat LOL!

You pull 10 new black cars off a dealers lot into your garage under the same lights and 9 won't have that level of gloss and clarity. Seems all black cars on dealers lots get swirled almost instantaneously by the "detail dept". That Suburban hood probably hasn't looked that good for 13.75 years:) I love black paint, but I love my family more. Now by the time you pull that Sub back outside for 1/2 a day, it's probably already time for a rinseless wash.

Thanks for everyone's comments. I'm feeling a lot better about it and have some confidence to start the correction on my 63 VW shortly. I ordered some 4" pads that I thought would help around the chrome and body lines. Classic VW's may be small, but I feel you don't get as much open paint areas to work with.

AGO backordered on HDSpeed. :-(

It wasn't too bad in the garage before noon. I had the portable cooler going to help move some air. Now next week will be another story.

Black paint is a favorite of mine too. Being able to keep the sub garaged does help keep it clean also... at the end of the day though, I do live in the middle of a dust bowl.

I'm late to the party. I'd hit that with some Poorboys black hole, then top it with a wax/sealant and call it good. Great work!

Looks great.. :)

Just a suggestion...

Instead of reducing pressure (assuming you are using a DA), keep pressure constant and perhaps reduce speed for the last pass or so... You will get a better result on a DA by not letting the pad spin up under light load, although I think your results look GREAT :)

Great advice. Thanks. I'll give that as try as I work my way through this large vehicle.

Good job on the detail.
Observation : Why are so many threads typed in one line. I have to extend the picture on my screen to read them. Is this the result of the Website overhaul ?
This is the way I am seeing so many threads. Usually there is not such a wide area to type.

This is the way I like to see posts. When I opened this post, the writing was in one long line. Now as I see it ,
it looks as it should. Are there gremlins at work?
