My 1st serious Detail.

I'm brand new to this scene. I read a bunch of threads and tried to do the best job I could detailing my year old Audi A6. Please tell me what you think? I used the McGuires 4 step deatail process. Clay, Paint cleaner, polish and NXT paste wax, all done by hand. Total time over 6 hours. I'm pleased with the results. Please let me know what works best with my midnight blue paint? I'm sure I can improve.

Man that looks pretty good, especially for OTC products. Imagine if you use the boutique products, it will blow you AWAY!! Either way, it looks good and be proud of your work.

Yeah, over 6 hours by hand wore my ass out! My question is do you get better results by hand? If not I'm all over a Porter! The other question I have is, what was would be the best for my midnight blue color?
 
Welcome to the forum Bigguns! I love the Audi A6, that new body style is amazing. I've heard a lot of people say they prefer driving that compared to a 6-series BMW!

Fantastic job on the detail by the way, we all know how finicky Audi paint can be!

Yeah, a porter cable will give you better results (unless you are superman or have no swirls, defects, etc.). For your midnight blue, what are you looking for it to do? Do you want to accentuate the metallic? Do you want to make it look wet and deep?

Metallic - Go for a high quality sealant and top with a wax
Wolfgang Deep Gloss Sealant
DP Max Wax

Depth and wetness - Glaze and wax
XMT Finishing glaze
Pinnacle Souveran Paste

Be prepared to spend some money in this hobby, it can get quite expensive with the products and tools that you "have" to have. :) Good luck and let us know if you have anymore questions.
 
Good job, and by hand! oh that takes time.

PC makes the job go faster, its less work more play.

PC + Edge pads is "the deal"

I do use hand power my self, I like to apply sealer/wax by hand, also depending on how much plastic trim it is on the car, but cleaner, swirl removal is a PC job.

Haha, I spent 14 hours using a machine! You will definitely want to pick up a PC. You will get better results much quicker. A lot of people including myself like to use it for applying wax and sealants as well. You can get more even coverage, and in my case save my wrists since they get sore doing it by hand.

As far as the best for your color, that is up to you. Souveran paste and Nattys Blue are a couple of the most mentioned waxes for dark colors, especially black. But there are so many choices, and everyone sees things differently so you really can't say subjectively what will be the best.

Thanks, I might be a little biased but I think this is the best color combination the midnight blue with the Amaretto interior. Funny story, I was looking at buying a new A6 and I pretty much settled on the one I wanted, which stickered out close to 50 grand!! I started looking around and I found this car on Ebay. This guy owned a brand new Lexus GS300 and this car. He lived in NY and Palm Beach FL and split his time 50-50. This car had only 2988 miles on it when I bought it. Needless to say......I stole the car and saved myself a ton of money in the process. I am an Ebay lover!! I had 3 other similiar opportunities to buy nice Luxury cars at unreal prices. If you find them fast, you can get them cheap.

Anyway, thanks to everyone for there comments and input, this is a very cool board, almost feels like family. :righton:

I love light interiors too - mine has that as well - but they are a dirt magnet.:(
Gives you an excuse to clean the car and use your AG products!

Thanks! I agree with you but............there are sooo many products I have no idea on which one's to get? I think I am going to start with Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant or Klasse High Gloss Sealant Glaze and top it off with Pinnacle Souverän, Nattys Blue or P21S Concours Carnauba Car Wax. Any suggestions??
 
Nice ride. I can say that from experience, as we just picked up the same car - A6 midnight blue with the amaretto interior. We had a devil of a time locating it, but it was worth it.

Nice job on the detail. I'm in a similar position as you, just starting out with a more serious detail than what I typically do to my truck. Any reason you went with the meguiars? I asked the dealer detail show what they used, and that's the product they recommended.
 
Awesome job! It is difficult to get results like that by hand, but you really did the paint justice. You will flip when you use the PC for the first time. It is like night and day over detailing by hand. +1 on the Wolfgang paint sealant. It's got a really nice look to it and topped with Souveran it is amazing. The Pinnacle leather conditioner is awesome too. I think your seats would really like it. Awesome work! :cheers:
 
Fantastic job on the A6! If you decide to get a Porter-Cable, you will take that paint to another level of detail.

Black looks fantastic with Souveran, but during the winter, I'd be content with Wolfgang sealant or NXT.

Keep up the fantastic work!

The A6 is an amazing car! I drove an A4 while my car was getting serviced and the A6 is 10 times the car. As far as why I chose the Meguiars, I did some research on it and most of it was favorable. Considering it was my 1st real detail, I guess I did a good job considering all the positive feedback I have been getting. I was impressed by the product. I put another coat of NXT on it today and it looks great.

With all the feedback I have gotten, I am getting a Porter Cable. I can't imagine that the paint can look that much better but that's why I'm here.....to get advice by people who know. I would defintely recommend you do the 4 step process like I did. Meguiars website gives you full instructions on how to detail the car using their process.

My next project will be my other car, a 1998 Infiniti Q45 with a black exterior.
