Hi Everyone!

I posted a 'hi' in the watercooler thread http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/introduce-yourself/75152-hi-texas.html, and my first question about tool selection here: http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/porter-cable-7424xp-updates/71682-car-polisher-accessories-advice.html

To save you from having to click to the watercooler link, here's a photo of my car after I did a 2-day detail on it in May of last year:

Since that was done in May (I was not able to get out the swirls and other nasties with the tool I had) it's now time to do it again - this time, I want to use the 'proper' tools, pastes, liquids, and so on. That detail included a thorough wash, a clay bar treatment, a polish, and two wax coats, followed by a final sealant. *I* don't do car washes with those nasty brushes or even micro fiber things on wheels - I'll do power wash or "touchless" washes only.

The first question (posed in the tools thread) was "should I get the polisher alone, and select custom (hopefully better) polishes, compounds and so on, or should I just get one of the kits, like this one: Griots Garage Random Orbital Polish & Wax Kit, Griots Garage Dual Action Polisher, Griots machine polishes, Best of Show Wax

I was thinking that the PBL products would be interesting to apply, if only to seal / protect the paint and give me something hydrophobic as long as possible. The PBL line could, according to how I interpret what Mike told me offline, be applied after a wash, but the car is screaming for a good polish first! Looking at the PBL line, I'm not sure I need everything - but this kit looks like it has all that I need: Pinnacle Black Label Diamond Coating Elite Kit for AFTER the car is polished and prepped.

In the "Lady in Red" thread (stunning work!!) http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/ask-expert-featuring-mike-phillips/71247-lady-red-1986-porsche-4-step-process.html Mike uses two Wolfgang products - are those something someone like me could use, or am I wasting my money with those, and should just go with some Meguiars (which I already have)?

I need to take some more recent photos of my ride, including some of the latest scratches (the paint seems very soft!). I'll post those as "before" photos next week after the products I order arrive!

Oh, and another question - how many of you de-badge these cars before you polish them? I don't want to damage the badges and I know they come OFF fairly easily - but putting them back ON is another issue...
 
I would piece together your own custom setup rather than getting a pre made setup.

I agree with Mike, use the Wolfgang products on your German beauty.

:iagree: I've used Menz FG400 on that same car with great results.

Thanks! I'm sure I can go that route. It's the 'get fantastic results' bit that isn't for sure! Either that, or get a car to drive to a "fix me" workshop...

Don't sell yourself short. If you read up on good products and techniques, watch the video's here, take your time, and pay close attention to what your doing, you'll be shocked at how good it will turned out.

I practiced my first time on an old beat up Subaru and was stunned by the beauty I was looking at when I was done. I'm not very handy with tools, so if I can do it, any one can. Maybe not to the level of the pro's here, but still...

Ok - I've put my order in for products... (I do have detailing supplies at home, but needed a few more things)

The polisher:
Griot's Garage Random Orbital Wolfgang Duo - I got the 6" HD version

For the pitted glass:
CarPro Ceriglass Glass Polish

As I used up all the clay I had on the last detail:
Pinnacle Ultra Poly Clay Special

In addition to the two Wolfgang products that came with the kit above, I also ordered:
Wolfgang Uber Compound 3.0

and needed some prep polish:

Detailer's Coating Prep Polish

And to finish this, as it is a black car, I chose:

BLACKFIRE BlackICE Hybrid Montan

Wish me luck....

What kind of pads are you using?
 
Er - I'm hoping the pads that come with the polisher will do the trick - is that a bad assumption?
 
You will love the Blackfire black ice polish/wax. great choice there.

I think the Lake Country Hydrotech line gives the best cut and finish. However, they're not very durable(especially the cyan).

Lake Country Hydro-Tech 5 1/2 x 7/8 Inch Foam Pads 3 Pack - Your Choice!

Go with the good ol' Lake Country Flat pads. I'd get at least 3 of each orange, white, and black.

Lake Country 5 1/2 x 7/8 inch Beveled Edge Pads 6 Pack, foam pad kit, build a kit, buffing pads, curved edge pads

For the most cut, the best would be these...

Meguiars DA Microfiber Cutting Discs, compounding discs, cutting pads

Nice ride - I have the 2014 version of it. They are such nice rides - the V* is just awesome :). I coated it with PBL and LOVE how the finish looks.
