My detailing shelf exploded...

So my wife and I were sitting watching TV tonight and heard a loud bang. Couldn't quite tell where it came from but it sounded like something BIG fell. Started checking doors and opened the door to the garage and got hit with a wall of smoke and flames. Tried to reach in and open the garage doors but couldn't (too much heat and smoke). Slammed it shut, went outside and called 911. Opened the exterior door to the garage off my porch and hit it with my fire extinguisher. Was my detailing shelf, now laying across my wifes new Mustang and engulfed in flames. FD got there about 12 minutes after I called and finished pulling out the fire. Pulled the Mustang and my Focus out of the garage so they could ventilate. No damage to any vehicles; believe it or not! But I basically have no detailing stuff left. Much of it disintegrated. Oh; and just TODAY I got a new order of microfiber towels and some Griots Garage car wash soap.

Apparently a spark or smolder from a firework made it into the garage (was open earlier today while we were shooting of fireworks). That was hours ago but; that's what the FD says happened.

What a day!

Here's what I learned:

The fire department has really muddy boots. Just ask my carpets and hardwood floors.

Detailers Pro and Griots Garage products are pretty stinking durable! In the bottle they burn up; but in a garage hot enough to melt blinds and torch wooden stairs; GG windshield coating, and and DP paint sealant and DP paint coating still bead up just fine! I have NOTHING to wash our caked-in-ash cars (which came out without any damage!?!?); but I did hit them with the hose and the paint still beads and sheets. Gonna drive me insane with how filthy these cars are going to be for a while. My buckets and hose are all that survived; so I guess I'll get a hardware store wash mitt and some cheap soap somewhere and get them somewhat clean.

Phew!

This pic shows my car still beading/sheeting decently with DP paint coating on a filthy ash encrusted car!

WOW! That is insane! Glad everyone was ok and the cars are fine too...

Wow!...

Talk about a finale. Glad you, your family and your home are safe, could've been much worse.

Hope everything gets put back together for you.

Major bummer, Romans.
Glad, however that the cars, rest of the house, spouse, etc. etc. are OK. Could have been much worse.

And AG is running that nice sale for July 4th :)

You know the frustrating part is the only stuff that survived is that crummy armor-all junk. People get it for me as Christmas gifts all the time (You know, I like to clean my cars, so I must want those armor-all gift packs). They were on the bottom shelf, almost entirely unopened. Guess I just never felt like throwing it away. And that's about all that survived! If you look closely you can even see the melted remnants of my Griots Garage polisher.

Wow! Sorry for your loss brother, but glad the family and vehicles made it out ok.

Wow that's rough. Shoot me an address i send out some soap to clean those cars lol.

I have some Meguiar's Gold class liquid and paste wax and gold class car wash as well. If you'd like them PM your address.

:wow: ... Romans ...Close call... :wow:

•Glad everyone is OK!
•Wonder what fireworks set this off this explosion.
-Was it:
A Roman candle?!?!

Thanks for the generosity all! I am going to try and make a claim on my insurance for this. So much should get replaced, I hope, soon. I'll see how that works out before I start asking for any donations!

BUT; the second heart attack has happened. A few months ago I re-upped my renters insurance policy (I'm a Pastor and I live in a church-owned Parsonage); I asked for a $100 deductible. According to my insurance companies website; I have a HOMEOWNERS policy with a $500 deductible. This doesn't make me happy. Guess that's what I get for not double checking.

Just curious:
What fireworks (besides "sparklers") are legal where you live...
The ones that are legal for use by Consumers that don't have a permit to "shoot them off"?

And surely you're not going to use the FD's report when filing the insurance claim...Are you?

If that happened in my garage I bet my reloading bench would make it much worse. Wouldn't want to see what pounds of powder and primers would do in the party. pretty sure I wouldn't want to be home.

Glad nobody got hurt and the cars made it throught the ordeal in pretty good shape.

Life seems to be one challenge after another. Let's us know if we can help you through the short term.

WOW, that an incredible story and it took out your detailing supplies to boot!!

I'm glad no one was hurt, now it's time to clean a few things up.....

Bob

Most stuff is legal here Bob. No permits needed. Not inside any city limits anyway!

If you were here in New Jersey they would of probably arrested you for illegal fireworks and they would make you out as a terrorist. And the insurance company would denied coverage because of illegal activity. Glad it wasn't that bad for you.:buffing:
