Hello all, second post. My first was in the Intro forum. Here goes.

Been lurking for a while, reading, listening, reading, bought the iBook and loved it, bought a buffer, some pads, stuff. Lots of stuff. Finally got the time to work on the wife's new 2013 Prius. I had "practiced" a few weeks ago on my 2006 Highlander so I was not completely clueless, just very little real experience.

My wife picked up the car a couple of weeks ago at a dealership used and in great condition. A few minor scratches here and there but nothing really bad. Paint looked in good shape. They wanted to sell her the $600 "teflon coating" so I played dumb and asked them how that worked and if they took the old wax off before applying the Teflon coating and the guy said NO, they just applied it over the current surface after a wash. I told my wife that I would do it for half price and she decided not to pay the $600 and let me do it (of course I didn't charge her).

So Labor Day weekend and I'm all set. Wash and dry the car, get it into the garage, get going. Starting with the roof, then hood, then one side, then the other side, then the trunk/hatchback.

I start clay barring the roof and notice a lot of roughness. I had noticed when I dried the car that it seemed a little rough in areas especially the roof and I thought that perhaps my microfiber waffle weave towel was not clean but I put that outta my head as I always wash them separately etc. so I was just puzzled. Now I take a look at the clay bar after doing a small area and sure enough its brown from oxidation and crap. Looks like the one year old car with 13K miles was never detailed, likely just made its way though a car wash on occasion. Well the mystery of why the towel felt rough was solved - its just oxidation etc. Finish the clay barring the roof and break out my DA buffer.

I divided the roof up into four equal areas which was a little larger than the recommended 2' x 2' area but it worked out well. After a pass with my DA and a black Lake Country pad with Wolfgang Finishing Glaze 3.0 I then completed the work with a blue LC pad with Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant 3.0.

To make a long story short, I worked the entire car this way, and did two coats of the Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant 3.0. All in all I spent about 8 hours over two mornings. Pictures at the end of this post. My wife is very happy.

This forum taught me everything I know about detailing and I am very grateful for it. Great people, knowledge sharing, tutorial videos, products, etc. And the iBook was amazing. I loved how it is organized with so many videos and photos. A real life saver when starting out like me. I now have the confidence to repeat my accomplishments on my 2006 Highlander. Thanks Mike and this Forum!

Hope the pictures come out. Its a dark blue Prius. Kinda hard to tell from the photos I know. But you get the idea.

Thanks,
Michael

Oh and I didn't use the "swirl remover" I bought as I just wanted to practice with the least abrasive product until I'm really confident. Then I'll try to tackle removing some swirls.

Besides the fact that you are pleased with the results
you obtained on the Prius, and the AGO forum...
Glad your Wife is also happy: Congratulations!! :xyxthumbs:

Prius:
Everytime I see the name/word Prius...I think they
just couldn't remember how to spell Priapus. :D

Very good to hear... the ibook version of my paperback book is really the way to go due to the embedded videos, crisp pictures and links to more videos, articles and even products on the AG store.

The paperback is also really popular as some people just like to have a traditional paper book, including me...

Yeah the dealer applied paint protection is basically what the industry calls a

Profit Center

In marketing lingo. I'm not in car sales but I think the Internet did a lot to equalize the playing field to the point that there's not a ton of profit left in selling the actual car so dealerships make up for it by using multiple "profit centers" or add-ons.

That's not bad for a new car and that many steps... a person certainly doesn't want to rush and sacrifice quality when doing this type of job.

My wife is very happy.

The most important part of your story!

Wow! Now that's the kind of testimony we love to read!

Mike - thanks for the personal message on this forum. Its a testament to your commitment that you would take the time to reply to my post personally. Wow. I am honored. I owe that mirror shine to you personally.

Thank you, Mike!

PS: If I can do it, anyone can. I'm an iPhone programmer and didn't know anything about auto detailing until I found this site. Now just look at that shine! Any my neighbors are always jealous that my cars sparkle and that I spend time on them. And I never let any dealership wash them when they're in for service, even though its free. I'd rather do it myself and do it right. Michael

Good write up and nice job! your on the best site to learn and lots of helpful people to boot!

Thanks! As you can see I've been lurking and learning for three years before my first post. Now I just want to help out the other new guys. Yeah this site rocks!

Thanks again everyone!
Michael

Very tasty result:dblthumb2:

Each time you do some detailing you can try something a little different until you have a good read on what works best for your particular cars. Good call on not polishing as part of your first detail.

You can always :buffing: next time.

You're very welcome... I wish I had more time to spend on the forum but always something going on in the garage...

I"m going to guess you've read this article...

DON'T WASH CAR !!!!!!!!!!!

Well done Michael!

That and a well written article.

A year and a half later and the Prius still feels pretty smooth when washed. Its not as beautiful as it was when I first detailed the paint, however its still very nice.

I'm going to do my daughter's Corolla this weekend so I wanted to dig up this information to refresh my memory. I'll post some pics when done.

And thanks again for a great forum and great products!

Michael

From the job you did on the Prius, the Corolla will turn out looking great.

Thank you for the kind words. I just did the roof, to get re-aquainted with the products and techniques. Gonna do the rest tomorrow. That was just a warm up. Gonna go watch the videos in the iBook I bought "Show Car Shine" just to refresh some more... this is really satisfying. The roof on the Corolla is so silky smooth and shiny. Just love it!

It is a good book. I have it in print and iBook editions.

Happy to hear you skipped the Dealership Detail and did the job yourself. Does not surprise me the said they just slather it over the car after just a wash. Knuckleheads.

Car looks great Mike. Nice first detail.

When using a finishing polish such as the Wolfgang Finishing Glaze step down to a white polishing pad for a bit more swirl correction power. It will also finish up the paint clear and ready for wax. Compare pad descriptions for reference.
Lake Country 5 1/2 x 7/8 inch Beveled Edge Foam Pads, buffing pads, Lake Country curved edge pads, polishing pads

Stick around Mike, plenty to learn on this friendly interactive forum.
