Did a job for a guy with a really nice 06 BMW. It turns out that someone had taken a rotary buffer to it and put some serious swirl marks on the paint. There were "rows" of swirls on the hood and trunk mostly. He didn't really need a full correction, so I advised him to let me compound the hood and trunk, (and a couple other spots) and do a regular light abrasive polish on the rest of the car with PB's PnS. The rims and tires needed virtually nothing done to them since they were brand new. Although some of the deep scratches couldn't be removed, all parties involved were happy with the results.

Here's some pics for those interested. BTW, yeah, beamer paint is HARD!

Thanks, I think I'm gettin the hang of this.

Since his car is dd, and far from perfect, I told him not to expect miracles. Rather, we walked around the car and I explained to him what could be done, and what needed a body shop. He understood that there would still be minor imperfections, but being so shiny now, you tend to not not notice them as much. Create a diversion I say!

Thanks to everyone here who helped me when I asked, and to those that just like to provide info. I've taken the basics and rolled with it. Being a natural doesn't hurt either. ;)

I know I still have a lot to learn, it's just that I learn real quick.

I guess it varies sometimes, but there must be a reason why some cars have a rep for hard paint, and others for soft. Btw, my 98 camry is no where near as hard as the beamer I just did. Go figure. Like someone said, it's like polishing rocks.

The more I do it, the more respect I have for other detailers. The amount of work involved is almost insane. You almost have to be OCD. Actually, that might be a prerequisite. Especially if your a mobile detailer doing it in hot weather. You definitely earn every penny.

Right now I'm averaging about 25 an hour which is much better than my night job. But holy crap batman, it makes me feel old. I just hope I get used to it. Professional detailing is no joke. And definitely not for the weak or lazy. Props to you full time warriors. :dblthumb2:

Knowing what you know now, isn't it hard to understand how someone can inflict swirls into a nice car like this BMW using a rotary buffer and actually think they're doing a good job?

Nice work Ed! Hopefully you educated your customer a little on how to take care of your work and not run it through the car wash.

Did the trunk and hood shine up more than the rest of the car? I don't like spot polishing or spot compounding because it seems like the spot that got the extra attention looks shiner and glossier than the rest of the panel. It's hard to tell from the pictures if all the panels look uniform.

I agree detailing is way more physical than my day job. When it makes you feel really old it's time to hire a teenager to work with you. I let my helper do all the tough stuff. Good luck.
