Okay, a little backstory;

I hopped on AutoGeek after ordering my brand new Ford Focus. I ordered it on October 2nd. I wanted to learn more about caring for the paint and finish of my new car. After some research, I instructed a confused but cooperative salesman NOT to prep my car before delivery. (In fact, he was excited to show me that it wasn't washed or prepped when it did come in; which I thought was cool)

On November 26th, my new car rolled off the assembly line to sit outside, unprotected at a factory parking lot before taking a dirty train to hop onto a filthy truck to get to the dealership. On December 3rd, it got to the dealership- and man did the filth show. It was absolutely filthy, despite having 0.2 miles on the odometer (just the distance from the end of the line to it's parking spot on the 'waiting' ramp!)

Signed the papers, took it home. Next day, a big winter storm blew in. Over the next several days, tons of snow, ice, and filth. Without a garage, my best hope was to keep it clean with coin-ops and waterless washes.

TODAY, it was finally above freezing, and the snow was done and not expected again for another week (woohoo!). So I got to my moms house (You're never too old to mooch off of your mama, haha!) to use her garage.

Washed, clayed, iron-x'ed;

Iron-X doing it's thang on the wheels (black paint + dark purple iron x doesn't really produce a dramatic picture on the paint);

So the next thing I did (no pics, sorry) was use a 3" pad on my GG and some Meg's UP to get rid of some swirls on my spoiler. It had some protective plastic on it and the dealer removed it and wiped off the residue with something and swirled it. But; those were the only swirls I found so I guess I can't complain TOO much. (At least they didn't wash and thus swirl up the rest of the car). Worked great. Touched up two other small spots that had fine scratches from ice sliding across the car, used IPA to ensure that they were really gone- did awesome!

The next thing was supposed to be Menzerna SF4500. I kept hearing good things about how it makes paint 'pop'. But, I just couldn't see a difference. I taped off two separate 50/50 spots and tried various pads and speed settings and could never get to a point where I could see a difference with halogen lights, LED lights, flourescent overhead lights OR the bright sun. It looked the same to me. There were no scratches or correction needed to I elected NOT to polish the car. My thinking was it was not worth removing even a tiny amount of precious clear if the differences were not noticeable. Was that the right decision? Or was I just using the SF4500 wrong? The paint has to be soft because swirls came out with Meg's UP on a fine 3" polishing pad at speed 3, and they came out EASY. And yes, I did an IPA wipe to ensure that it wasn't just something filling IN the scratches.

But ANYWAY; onward and forward;

I think it turned out okay! Gonna go out with the DSLR and take some GOOD pics (just some cellphone pics right now). But thanks for all the help AutoGeek!

Two questions I do have;

1) Does it sound reasonable that I wasn't able to see any noticeable difference with SF4500? Keeping in mind this is a brand new car never molested by the dealer.

2) The black 'pillars' in the doors were the other area the dealer removed plastic and scrubbed, leaving behind scratches. I wasn't able to achieve ANY correction with Meguiars Ultimate Compound. I was using a Griots Garage 3" red pad. Any pad/compound suggestions for getting rid of those swirls?

Thanks!

A parting shot;

SF4500 will make only the most subtle of differences if the paint is already nearly flawless. Sometimes it is easier to 'feel' than to see... if you lightly slide the back of your hand across the surface that has been jeweled with SF4500 it may have a slicker feeling compared to an area that has not been polished.

Car looks great btw!

Well- do you think I made the right decision opting NOT to polish? It's a daily driver, I'm gonna have it a long time; it just didn't seem 'worth it' to remove ANY clearcoat for such minimal results on a car with no major defects that need correcting.

Also just realized that my 'taped up' pic was an 'in progress' pic. There was still more tape applied after that!

Nice job, you've started the right way on your new car, it'll probably looks it's best for it's entire life under your care.

Not polishing the car was wise, protecting it either. However, if you had some DP prep. polish (a paint cleansing polish) that would be great to leave a extremely clean surface for DP poly coat sealant.

Not that you missed that much in this case, but if we would add steps to what you've done, that would be a good one.

Nice work indeed,

Kind Regards.

Okay! Time for the glamour shots. I am neither a detailer nor a photographer but I had fun pretending to be both!

Shot was a Canon 50mm f/1.8 at f/9, varying shutter speeds but mostly 1/50

I LOVE these Focus SE Sport wheels. (Yes, I know the wheel wells are dirty!). Also, I did drive around a little bit; and the roads are FILTHY thanks to this winter storm, so it's a little dirty already

Hey, you 'pretend' really well, nice shots, and (already said), nice work.

Kind Regards.

Yeah, no pretending going on! Nice photos, work and car!!

Thanks so much guys! I appreciate the kind words.

Just got done tossing all of the MF towels in the wash and getting to work on the pads. I'm not sure if it's the CG pads, or if this is typical; but I can not BELIEVE how much product is still in those pads. After soaking them in pad cleaner and water, I can squeeze then and globs of product come out and rest on the surface! Whoa!

I found that using a grit guard inverted as a 'press' in a bucket of pad cleaner and hot water is a great way to get rid of all of that product! Boy those are some thirsty pads! I suppose a little product wasted is better than a dry spot scratching the car.

Congrats on the new ride! Great job on it!

I really like the black paint on that Focus. Stick with a good cleaning routine and it's going to continue to look great and last a long time.

Oh yeah man. I'll be going through the car wash at LEAST once a week; and definitely the one with the brushes since it gets it the cleanest.

Hehehe, just kidding. Right now the regimen is waterless washing using DP waterless wash and some fluffy microfibers. When it warms up, it'll be two bucket washes and rinseless washes.

I like the black paint too. I love black cars (but hate black motorcycles; go figure). I can't quite decide if I'd prefer the metallic, or if it was just solid black (either way I preferred the black, flake or not, to any of the other colors it came in). But the flake really is growing on me, since it's several colors of flake which gives it this really custom feel to it. It does kind of look like a custom paint job which is cool.

If I didn't get Tuxedo Black, I think it would've been the Ruby Red Tintcoat. My wifes bike is similar; a red with tented clear. It is GORGEOUS. Paint is so deep I'm afraid to go to near it or I might fall in!
