I just got it today and opened the box like a kid and ran to my car to take some measurements. Boy am I relieved and extremely happy to see good readings on the various panels of my car (between 6-8 mils on all panels). Im the MAN

I was worried about all the polishing I've done on the car, even though people on this site told me I probably didn't need to worry. I was expecting to see readings like 1-2 mils......which if I did I probably would be dead due to heart attack by now. Anyhow, I'm EXTREMELY happy with my purchase and love my new toy! Thanks Autogeek! :dblthumb2:
 
Congrats on the new PTG! It comes in handy in so many different situations.

One thing thats got me confused is your getting 8 mils showing up on your car? That sounds way thick. Repaint thick. Most factory paints are within the 4-6 mils zone. What kind or car do you have?
 
A 2010 black Camaro..............I didn't think of that. But it looks too good to be a body shop repaint?
 
I dont know if its a repaint or not but to me that seems really thick for a factory job. I know when dealers get new cars in and they get damaged somehow from transit they will spray part of the car. I've also seen many good resprays that even tricked me a few times.
 
Congrats on your new toy. I was always a bit apprehensive when I knew a car had been compounded by someone previously...it really put my mind at ease and has SERIOUSLY saved my hide a few times on paint that should not have been thin, but were.
 
That's a really nice gauge. Can you switch it to the 1/10000 inch scale? Or maybe it's the micron scale. When I measure factory paint I generally get 85 to 140 units of measurement. And the meter will read one unit. So after wet sanding on a DA with 800 grit I only went from say, 91 to 89. Hardly any loss at all.
 
Don't know much about it yet, just got it today. I learned how to zero it, switch from mils to microns, and of course, take measurements. :)

It's normal. I measured the 2010 Camaro I recently polished, and the paint was WAY thick.
 
An engineer told me the actual Meter is only $28.00 to produce and package but the lack of competition and the patent licensing are what allow them to sell it for close to $700. There are bootleg units that work just as well starting to filter in from Hong Kong for around $75 or so I have heard. I will keep my eyes open :)
