Hey All,

We just took delivery on this new Tesla Model Y for my wife. Overall, we love this car, but of course I needed to spend the day with it first before she could drive it. I did my typical new car routine including decontamination, polish, and sealant. I know Tesla has a reputation for poor new car delivery. It's not uncommon to see them arrive scuff, hammered, and even dented. This one was pretty damn good. It had a few defects that needed correcting, but otherwise it was great. Except, it had by far the worst iron contamination I have ever seen! It's like they stored this car in a rail yard. I had to do several rounds with IronX and Adams Iron spray to get rid of it.

My routine included:
  • Foam rinse
  • Wash with dawn
  • Iron X decontamination
  • Griots clay bar
  • M105 on only spots that showed defects on inspection with LED light
  • M205 polish entire car with Flex tool and white LC Hybrid pads
  • IPA wipedown
  • Wolfgang Deep Gloss sealant
  • Optimum tire gel

Let me know what you think:

Looks really good to me. Enjoy it!

It's a little disconcerting that you say Teslas arrive scuffed, hammered and dented, and that seems normal.

To me as well. I spent a lot of time going over this car to make sure it wasn't damaged before I took delivery. But yah, look at the Tesla forums and you'll see tons of stories of cars arriving in awful shape. They make a cool car, but their distribution and fulfillment is not great.

Nice job..it appears your more a sealant guy than a coating.

Thanks man. Yes I haven't made the leap to coatings yet. The time might be right though. I have an M3 coming in a few months. Im the MAN

This is exactly where most cars are stored before delivery to the dealer.

I work for a dealer (Ford), and I am in charge of all new arrivals. I talk with all of the delivery drivers, and they tell me the holding pens are directly adjacent to rail terminals. (Which makes perfect sense from a logistical standpoint).

But yeah, I see cars/trucks arrive to us that are covered with so much rail dust that they appear brown. :(

Is your dealership as empty as all the dealerships here?

Yes, it is.

It’s nation-wide. :(
