Hey everyone.

I have a vehicle that has some NASTY caked on carbon on the exhaust tips. I cant tell whats underneath so I don't quite want to go to steel wool just let.

I don't think APC will dissolve all of that, but maybe you guys know better. I was thinking about getting some Brasso OTC and trying that out.

What do you experts think?

I would try P21S polishing soap. That stuff has pulled some crazy stains off metal for me.

Is that an MK6 GTI exhaust tip? Don't be worried about using steel wool with some metal polish on stainless steel exhaust tips. If you are worried about damaging the surface use a junk microfiber towel and some metal polish. The microfiber towel will eventually yield the same results as steel wool after quite a bit more scrubbing.

Have you tried any sort of polishing?

A simple metal polish on microfiber towel usually works great at removing exhaust tip buildup.

I agree with P21S polishing soap. What I also did the first time I cleaned my exhaust tips was to spray iron x on it as well, nothing but purple came out.

@Critical - It is a MKVI GTI. Good look!

@ZMC - I haven't tried anything yet. I didn't want to go out and buy a bunch of products to have them not work and then sit on my shelf forever!

My friend has the same vehicle and his exhaust tips always look like the picture you posted. The after pictures of the exhaust will make for quite a dramatic difference.

I did a GTI that had tips just like that. Cleaned up easily with CG metal wax and a microfiber towel. Apply by hand, rub vigorously, and wipe off with clean towel. Took no more than 15 minutes.

You can find that thread somewhere in the Show N Shine area. I'd post pics but I am on my phone.

Diluted HF 1:10. Brush brush here and there. Voila in less than 2 minutes. Continue with any chrome polish and collinite 845.

CG's metal wax, or metal shine? Your picture indicates metal shine.

Lol I get them all mixed up... What you see in the picture is what I use.

Every Audi, BMW or Jag I do has this build up and I reach for the P21S polishing soap. Depending on how bad it is, additional applications may be needed but overall it works like a dream!
