Need a STRONG OTC wheel cleaner..

I dont think there is any clearcoat on the inside. I'll swing by and get some of that wheel and tire cleaner tomorrow. If that doesnt cut it, I'll try the 0000 wool or the scotchbrite pad.

It needs to be super clean for that opti-coat to bond, so I need to do whatever I can.

To answer your original question, you want Meg's Chrome Wheel Cleaner. It's acid. It's the only OTC thing easily available that I know of that will work on nasty barrels. Don't let it dry on the barrels or the wheels.

Mothers makes one as well (Chrome Wheel Cleaner), it isn't as strong.

Worse comes to worse, what would happen it some were to drip and dry on the face of the wheel, which is clear coated?

editeD: and this is it? http://www.meguiars.com/en/automotive/products/g19124-hot-rimsreg-chrome-wheel-cleaner/

That's it. The strongest stuff you can get locally without a prescription. Acid can etch through clear coat theoretically, but wheels are likely powder coated with a type of clear coat that is more durable and often harder. Just wet the barrel down, spray and agitate. Don't let it dry and you will likely not have an issue. I've used it to clean nasty wheels and never have had a problem. You don't want to use it routinely though.

These are polished wheels and then cleared over.. Maybe I shouldnt try it just yet. I may get the other megs , the all wheel cleaner and then lastly try this... Or may try some straight super degeaser or APC

This process is only being done to clean it up and give opti-coat a surface to bond to.

Here is a picture of the OEM ford wheels Im working with.

I don't believe the inside of that wheels is clear coated. I know it's not painted like German wheels. Honestly, if it's just tar and gunk mineral spirits or tar remover may help to remove spots.

Its super deep baked on brake dust lol. Its not thick, but some spots are heavy brown and some are light brown/stained brown.

Basically Im paranoid at messing up the face of the wheel. I have terrible luck when Im paranoid, Ive seen it plenty of times.

You need acid. Claying first may help, but not much.

okay would it be best to lay the wheel on the face or have it up as if it were on the car and work the acid in sections to eliminate any drip towards the face? Also, what should I use to scrub the acid into the wheel barrel?

Also any recommendations on what to use to polish in between the spokes?

Go to this Eagle 1 A2Z MSDS...http://www.whatsinproducts.com/files/brands_pdf/1337126136.pdf

You'll be surprised to see what chemicals, including an acid---(Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid)
that's in this wheel cleaning product. Very strong product.

Talk about cleaning the inner barrels!!
"Holy Toledo"!! you'll be shouting from the roof tops.

Follow this cleaning-procedure with the products/procedures I posted awhile ago:
Mother's aluminum polish; etc.; etc...And you'll also be good as gold.

Okay good deal. Can you give me a detailed step by step on your process?

Hf should have a buffing kit for like 18, it will have everything need.

I wonder if this is the same as the HF one

Anytime Tools POLISH BUFFING KIT for Mag Wheels, MANIFOLD, ALUMINUM, Stainless Steel, CHROME - Amazon.com

and this here?

Advance Auto Parts: Car, Engine, Batteries, Brakes, Replacement, Performance & Accessories

and lastly:

Amazon.com: MOTHERS 05101 Mag & Aluminum Polish - 10 oz: Automotive

What Im wondering with the Mothers polish, am I still going to be able to use opti-coat on the barrel surface? Or is it going to be too polished for it to adhere?

I don't think anything can be too polished. Haven't heard anyone talk about how well durable OC is on bare aluminum. Guess you can just post about it when your all done.:)

I used that Eagle one A2Z and a very fine scotchbrite pad and they did come clean with ease. Now Im going to wait for those polish bobs to come in and I'll hit them with the mother polish.

Thanks guys!

Im guessing after the mother polish I'll need to hit them a bunch with Eraser or 10% IPA to remove the oils, right?

Im worried about the opti-seal not bonding.. But honestly, they look good now, I dont think I'll need to polish them with the mothers. Its not a show truck, just a DD and I wanted to do this since the wheels were already off of the truck so why not, ya know?

Im starting to prep my extra wheelset for Opti-coat and the inside barrel will NOT come clean. m currently using what I have and I have tried Megs APC and Super degreaser. I tried them both at 4:1 max concentration.

Is there anything that can be bought at Advance auto that will work on these? Two of the wheels are pretty decent but still have the brownish tone, while two are still darker ( guessing the fronts? )

These were used when I just bought them ( obviously ) so I dont know their care history.. Thanks!

Optimum. Opti coat is awesome

Yeah as I've said it tons of times I wanted to do the face only . So why not the barrel the best I can?
