A few months ago I leased a car After a few car washes, I noticed swirl marks on the car. I baby this car..I hand wash it, 2 bucket method, and I dry it with microfiber towels. I decided to read up on detailing methods to correct the paint so I bought a porter cable 7424xp. I was going to use it a couple months after I bought the car but then someone had to key my car for no reason, as I am the nicest guy ever and never trouble anyone.

The body shop said I couldn't wax or do anything on the panels that were fixed for three months.. Well the three month period is just about up. So I want to correct the swirl marks that was most likely done by the dealership AND now the holograms + buffer trails that the body shop put on the passenger door panel. Thankfully my car is silver and hides the swirls + holograms really well. I can't really see them in direct sunlight, but when I park near a street lamp that's when I can notice them.

Here's the method that I am thinking.

Wash
Clay
Ultimate compound on a light cutting orange pad
Swirlx on a white pad
NXT wax

Now, I am a little confused if this is the correct way of correcting the paint. Will the orange pad + ultimate compound be a too aggressive method? If not, is following up with swirlx on a white pad a good idea, or should I use another pad ?

Method 2

Wash
clay
Swirlx on white pad
NXT

Would I need to follow up swirlx with anything if I use method 2 , or does swirlx leave an LSP finish ?

Thanks for the advice. One last question. When I use swirlx or UC, I use a slow speed setting like 2-3 and when applying wax a speed around 4-5 ?

I've never used either product. But, here is my 02. I would recommend a test spot to see what pad gets the job done.

What kind of vehicle is it?
Is the paint hard or soft?
Can you post any pictures?

I dont know if you can finish out with swirl x. If not, you will need a finishing polish.

Wash
Clay
Compound
Polish
Last step product (nxt)

Also, regarding the speeds of polishing. I use a flex, but for paint correction I usually use speed 4-6 and applying wax is a 3.

Ultimate compound should take the swirls out for you no need for scratch x. Look for a good paint sealant or carnuba wax.

On a silver car, the light orange pad is probably not too aggressive. There will be others with experience with Swirl X that can speak to the need for final polish. The main thing I noticed in your planned attack is that with the PC, you are probably going to need to be at speed of 5 to have any hope of correcting the holograms and buffer trails. You want to use the least aggressive method on a test section. That might be white pad and Swirl X. If that doesn't work, you can use the Swirl X in the orange cutting pad. Depending on the severity of the defects and silver paint, you may have to be more aggressive but work your way up to the orange pad and cutting compound.
Good luck.

I think he's talking about swirlx Jacob. You can finish out with it but it wouldn't be my first choice.

Yeah oops I accidentally got the wax applying speed and corrective speed mixed up haha. The car is a 2011 scion tc. The swirls are not really bad neither are the holograms, so I'll work with the least aggressive method first doing test spots.

Thanks for the help

You are definitely on the right path. Good luck and keep posting. You will get all the help you need.

Your talking simple paint correction. BUT you need to know how to machine polish. That said its about an hours work. Two hours to make the exterior glisten. Go to "expert auto polishing" go to you tube and watch them polish entire cars. LOTS of LUCK! Look at it outside in sunlight to check results.

Thanks and yeah I plan on making this an all day project so I can try and make things perfect :)

Oh and one more question. When I wipe off the nxt after thirty minutes or when a swipe test shows its ready, is it possible to use a quik detailer to make sure the wax residue is completely removed, or will that strip the wax off as its not completely bonded ?

NXT wipes off just fine. You shouldn't need a quick detailer. It's the easiest wax-off process I have seen. If you need to use a QD after you're done, it shouldn't be an issue. Or you can use a quick spray wax.
