next weekend I will be sealing my friends 2017 Lincoln MKX SUV...I have no idea if the paint is soft or hard...this is my plan

wash with dish soap
clay
compound
polish
paint prep
use sealant

Re: need help

Sounds like a solid plan. I can't say for sure how that paint will be, but all the FoMoCo vehicles I have done tended to be on the medium side...

Re: need help

You still planing to work by hand?

Only oil laded animals and dishes should be washed with dish soap.

Re: need help

Don’t go into a job worrying about paint hardness, be prepared for either scenario. Then do test spots to figure out best approach.

Like Surfer said, skip the dish soap.

You can use any dedicated car wash soap. Even a wash & wax since you will be claying, compounding, etc.

And what do you mean by "paint prep"? If you mean a panel wipe, that isn't necessary. You can go straight to your sealant after wiping off the polish.

If I said to use dish soap - there must have been a reason?

I just looked through all your threads on this forum, couldn't find my post recommending dish soap. I did find my recommendation to use a coating wash here,

https://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/auto-detailing-101-a/127286-whats-next.html?highlight=

Here's my recommendation

Get this wash,

Review: Wolfgang Uber SiO2 Coating Wash

And use the above product with this technique

How to safely wash a ceramic coated car by Mike Phillips - Traditional Hose & Bucket Approach

And for what it's worth - whenever there's a HUGE sale on the AG store - I come to this forum and let everyone know...

NOW IS THE TIME TO BUY!

Because it's a tick on the spendy side.

Always doing my best to help you guys....

:dunno:

Re: need help

Please do us a favor,

When created a NEW THREAD - ADD A FEW EXTRA WORDS BESIDES,

need help

It makes it more difficult to when you use the same 2 words over and over again.

Instead, add a few words about WHAT YOU NEED HELP WITH.

Thank you!

You must have confused Mike with Sal (Zanio) he recommends using Dawn.

Paint is medium. Should be able to clear up a lot with polish only if you have a decent polisher and clean pads.

Ditto...with TTQ B4U...

Skip dish soap---use soap designed for cars. Can Pick that up at your local Walmart.
Skip compound.
Just do a fine polish.
Drop the paint prep---go straight to sealant.

That'll shave off many hours!!!

the crazy thing Tom ..I already had Wolfgang Uber SIO2 ceramic wash..that I was using before...so you feel that all I need to do is wash....clay...polish...and seal...when I touch the hood of the Lincoln it was rough...thats when I thought about the compound...there again I am not an expert...

It is better than nothing if it is one of those machines I am thinking about. The good ole wax spreader.

I think you already got your answer on the dish soap lol
