so i'm in the market for a porter cable orbital polisher. the 7424xp specificcally. I'm planning on buying a kit from autogeek.net but i can't decide which kit to purchase. i know everyone has preferences but i've heard good things about both the xmt kit and the meguiars 105/205 combo. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. also any thing else i should purchase like other glazes or pads?

FIRST POST BY THE WAY

First off, welcome to the forum.

As far as the package question, if you could let us know the types of vehicles you will be using the XP on as well the condition of the vehicles it will help with the recommendations.

:welcome:

I did a lot of research and had a lot of people recommend the Griots over the PC

I would agree Cee Dog. I own the Flex, but have tried the Griots and XP during the detailing class. For the extra $10, I would also go with the new Griots.

You can purchase any of the XP packages with the Griots by adding $10 and calling up AG.

If we can find out a little more about his vehicles we can post our opinions and then he can decided on Griots vs XP.

i have a 2009 vw rabbit that only has very minor swirls but another vehicle i will be using it on is a 2002 saab 93 convertible that has major swirl marks and hard water etching

I have both the megs kit and the xmt kit with a pc. The megs kit does everything faster and better than the xmt kit. imo

Thanks for posting your vehicles Trix, it will help folks to give their opinions. Without doing a test spot on your vehicles (see, I can learn Mike), here is what I would suggest.

Buy the kit that gives you the stuff you need. Based on the size of your vehicles, I would say you need 2-3 orange CCS and 2-3 white pads plus a blue or grey finishing pad. I now personally prefer the hydro tech pads and if you go that route then the same - 2 or 3 of each plus a finishing pad. Not sure if AG offers a package yet with the Hydro Tech. If you want to go with those, you may need to give Dwayne/Meghan/Bobby a call and ask what they can do.

I am going to assume that the Saab is not bad enough to warrant yellow/wool pads. I wouldn't spend the money on those unless you know you need them for sure.

As far as polishes go, if you are a beginner at machine polishing I would recommend the wolfgang system. They are currently on sale on the special values page for the swirl remover and finishing glaze (which is really a finishing polish). They are essentially foolproof and do a fantastic job. If you have used a machine in the past and don't have a learning curve, the megs 105/205 are great also, I just found that concentrating on the polisher and pad instead of the polish itself was easy. So both polish systems are great, I just found less to worry about with the same finish worked for me.

As far as the actual polisher, again I personally like the additional power/torque the griots gives over the PC. Neither is a bad choice however. Some folks prefer the Porter Cable name over Griots and purchase based on that.

So to summarize, if possible my opinion is go Griots/Hydro Tech/Wolfgang.

Happy polishing!

You will also need some pad cleaner, but most come with xmt in the package.

If you go with that kit, you will need 2 orange CCS pads in addition.

I wouldn't want to polish out a full car with the 4" orange pads in that kit, just for the tight spots.

You would still need to pick up the Megs or Wolgang combo.
:buffing:

Thats a nice kit, however I'm not a fan of 6.5 pads for the PC, I would go 5.5.

PS: You don't need yellow cutting pads, nor 2 microfiber bonnets, nor the lambswool, the conditioner or the pad cleaner. Save yourself some money and get what you will use: 2-3 orange pads, 2-3 white pads and 1 red to apply waxes/sealants and thats it.

Same as my recommendation, except I think you need some type of pad cleaner. Remember if you go PC without a kit, you will need a backing plate.

The 6.5 pad works much better on the new PC, but if you want go 5.5. The Griots will turn either size no problem.
