Got a phone call from a regular whose adult son moved out of the house 2 years ago. She was asking for a possible barter involving these speaker boxes.

I have no clue as to what I'm seeing in person. The speakers do not seem weathered or worn.

1. How do I check condition?
2. How do I go about hooking them up?
3. How do I value them?
4. Are these worth my time and effort?

If need be, I can get better photos after 7pm.
Any help would be greatly appreciated :dblthumb2:

As long as everything works, you would need an amp to test, these can worth some $$$. The Sony subs are low/mid grade but would get you probably $100-150 on CL. The JL subs are high end consumer grade, although I believe by looking at the they're on the lower end of their line, and could bring in $200/250 on CL. Hope this helps.

JL Audio is some of the best audio equipment you can buy! Here is a link to prices on what those subs will see for new. Those appear to be W1v2's 12in(measure diameter of sub) To test the condition of the subs you need an Multimeter (electrical testing device). You need to Ohm the subs out. They will either be a 2ohm or 4 ohm setup.(determined on wiring). The box that the subs are in is probably valued at $75-$150 depending on the place that built it. I can see you eaisly selling the JL Audios for atleast $200 on craigslist or similar sight as is. Based off website pricing your looking at atleast a $500 setup on the JL audio system.

Car Audio - Subwoofer Drivers - W1v2

I don't know too much about the Sony's, they are a decent sound system, however they are sold at your local walmart. So check there if you are looking for price comparisons. Remember they are used but if you were to give them $250-$300 credit I don't see any reason why you wouldn't make your money back if your trying to sell them.

Also take them down to the local audio store and ask them to test them for you. Most places are very willing to help, due to the possibility of offering you an install for them.

Hope this helps!

OP may go with this but who knows. Do either of you know anything about what your looking at or basing your opinions on a simple pic?

I have been in the audio world since about 97/98 myself honestly. The subs when bought new were really nice (at least the JL's) the sony's are sold at walmart. The reason I say $100 is look at the leaves and such on the JL's. Chances are they were stored in a garage or shed with tempratures ranging from hot to cold with dry and humid air which will do a number on the paper and rubber seals on the subs not to mention the terminals internal to the subs and boxes. But its just my opinion

Offer $100 in credit
Sounds reasonable. Seeking 3 bills on a 2008 neglected BMW belonging to her seventy-something mom.
Looking at OHC on mf pads, should finsh out nicely with OPS/OOS topped with OCW...based on experience, not test spot. Wheels and interior are trashed. 8-9 hours tops for the vehicle.

I have no use for them. I'm just gonna give'em to my son next month anyway if Craigslist doesn't pan out.

That's my problem. I don't know electronics well and looking for suggestions also as how to check them out.
Heck I burned up my Texas Star/DX 959 labor day weekend when I returned home. Hopefully just the amp.
$100 imho
Thank you.

I didn't think about the box value.
Will look at provided link after this post.
Thank you much. I just want to be fair to her also.

I have a similar (almost identical) setup to the JL subs.

My question. The there an amp included or the wiring? This will have a big impact on value because of what you may have to buy to make everything work together.

I actually do agree with others that around $100 is fair to start out with and it would go up if there is amp and wiring included. If the box or anything is damaged the value obviously would go down.

The other real question is what are they worth to you? Do you want them or are you going to try and sell them. If you are looking to sell them I wouldn't go any higher than $50 - 75.

Yes. They were shelf-stored in a garage.
It was dark-thirty when I took the cell pics. The wind blew the leaves onto the spider webs.

She has the amp, but is keeping it for some reason.

Anyway for me to hook up to my home stereo to inspection sound condition?

I don't want them, nor have a need for them. She's a good customer, so I won't really lose out @ $100. She just wants to do something nice for her mom while she's here from Philly.

No amp, nor wiring included.

Good Morning,
What your looking at are car audio enclosed subwoofers. These speakers are not full range audio speakers. They are designed to produce low frequency output only. They compliment other full range speakers that can't handle sub frequencies. To hook them up to perform at there best you will need an active x-over and an amplifier. If you have an aftermarket radio you would use the RCA pre out plugs to install. Steps: Radio rca output to cross-over then to amplifier then to sub enclosure. Some head units and amps come with sub outs and in's eliminating the need for a stand alone active cross-over. Remember these are car speakers usually rated at 4 ohms. Home speakers are rated normally at 8 Ohms. Lower ohm levels present a greater demand on the amplifier...be careful. . Use an standard ohm meter to check to make sure there ok. You tube has videos showing the precedure.Hope that helps you out

A little more involved than I thought.
Thanks for the info.

Guess I'll wait til tonight so as to get better pics posted on CL. At least I can get ball park figure on what some are willing to pay.

May seem foolish, but at this point I'm leaning towards $100 credit w/o the amp and wiring.
Detail has to be finished by Friday night, and I've got to do the CTS Thurs. that I blew off Monday.

Unless you have an amp to push them a correct feed I dont see it happening.

As an audio guy, I'd pass on someone elses random (even "big name") subwoofer boxes. Speakers can be like quoting that detail job without seeing it. You don't know how they've been abused over their life.

Besides that, I've never been a fan of Sony speakers.

Well...passing is not an option. I see three avenues for revenue/savings. Something is better than nothing.
She's not gonna pay the 3 bills for her mother's grocery getter/appointment maker and we're entering a rain/snow season. She handed the car down to her mom when mom's got banged up last year.

I could live with charging less on a two-step with WOWA/WOWO, but I don't see where I could go wrong by taking the speaker boxes also.

Take them in on the trade then and just clean them up/inspect them and flip them on craigslist.

I agree...the appearance of these subs may be fine....but you have no idea if they were overdriven or if the voice coils are good. I would value the JL's at 80$...they are the lower end JL's. The Xplods are walmart junk unfortunately.....
Then again you cant really lose by taking them because its not money out of pocket:thumbup:

I was really big into car audio before I replaced that addiction with detailing lol. I had a complete memphis audio system including components in all four doors and I sold my setup to start my detailing hobby.....I miss system though:(
