I've searched and couldn't find anything that would address my problem directly.

I had two deep scratches on my bumper from a dog jumping on my car (I'll attach a photo) on my brand new 335i (With only 1,200 miles!) and I took it by the BMW dealership so that their touch up guy could fix it for me. I was under the assumption that he would fill it with touch up paint then wet sand and compound/buff. I did NOT want the bumper sprayed.

Well, needless to say he sanded, primed and then resprayed half the bumper and while the color matches 100%, he clear-coated it outdoors and I am to bring it back to him in one week for him to wet-sand the clear and wet-sand a place where he touched up a rock chip.

To make a long story short, the clear coat has places that feel like over spray, and one place on the edge of the bumper is very cloudy/orange-peel looking. There are nibs here and there and around the sonic sensors it looks like the clear just needs sanding (not really sure).

My question is, could these clear issues I'm having be addressed with wet sanding? I'm hesitant that it can't be fixed. I just want it to look like nothing was ever done to it!

Sorry.

He did a real quick and sloppy job.

99% of people would never see it.

Looks like now it needs to be stripped and re-done. Just be glad it's new. Find a GOOD body shop.

I agree that he did a quick and sloppy job. I honestly thought that it was understood that I didn't want the bumper sprayed, but now I have to deal with this. 😡😡😡

Someone ELSE should be able to make that look a whole lot better with wet sand and polish. Im not sure its a strip and respray.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck with the new car. The first couple scratches or dents really hurt on a new car. I do agree with you on how you wanted the damage repaired, I would always prefer to keep as much of the factory paint intact as possible.

From the looks of your pictures the work just looks bad, but I would just wait until he finishes the job and see where you are at.

When you have a chance take a real good look at the car and make sure there is no overspray in other places.

I'm just not sure I want him wet sanding my car. He did have everything else on the car covered and had a lot of the bumper taped off, but let me further explain a little. Their "touch-up" guy works in their back, back lot touching up all of their cars.

The guy charged me $175 to "touch up" the scratch. I walk out there to check on it and the scratch has primer over it. So from there I watched him spray the color and the clear. I don't know anything about painting, but the fact that this guy did it while the car was on gravel in the outdoors should've made me make him stop, but he had already sanded down and primed the side of the bumper when I went to check on it.

I had this done at BMW of South Atlanta, and when I first met with the guy and I explained to the him what happened to the car and he said he could fix it. I was under the impression that he understood that I wanted the scratch touched up and wet sanded to blend because we had discussed this on the rock chip that he was also working on for me on the other side.

I'm just frustrated and angry that now I am probably going to have to take it to a body shop and have the entire bumper re-sprayed which is what I didn't want to happen to begin with.

The color looks okay to me, even in direct sunlight it matches with the entire bumper just fine. He told me to bring it back in a week and he'd wet sand the clear, but I honestly don't trust that the guy wouldn't do more damage than good now.

I'm going to make some calls today to see about getting the bumper wet sanded. I just don't feel comfortable taking it back to this guy so be can half-ass it again.

Anyone have any recommendations in the Metro Atlanta area?

I've never wet sanded and I only have a PC 7424XP and the most aggressive compound I have is Meg's 105... I'm not confident enough to venture into wet sanding myself. Plus, with no paint thickness guide I'm afraid I'd take off too much clear

Couple of choices here IMO

First of all talk to the dealerships bodyshop manager first then...

let the guy finish and see if your happy.

if not you need a real painter... most bodyshops don't like reworking old paint on these urethane bumper covers. It's much easier painting a new bumper cover (off the vehicle) then installing. These covers are designed to be replaced very easily and usually tool-less.

A friend of mine that also dose bodywork gave me a Denali bumper cover that just had a couple chips and a scrape. The truck it came off of the shop replaced with a new one. I've always wanted to do the Denali conversion so I took it.

I had to prep it really well being a previously painted urethane cover, adhesion promoter, epoxy primer, basecoat/clearcoat, wetsand, buff. If/when it needs painting again it's going in the dumpster. I'll just buy a new cover... it's a pain working old paint on these type of bumpers plus getting a good paint bond that wont rock chip can be an issue.

I'm presuming this guy doesn't actually work for the dealer and that he's a sub-contractor that comes around once a week to do this kind of thing for the dealer.

Anyone have any recommendations in the Metro Atlanta area?

Yes, there is a great detailer in the area...I just wish I could think of his name. Ok, his forum name was 1 Clean WS6 (Mike) and his business was Sweating the Details in Marietta, but he doesn't seem to be working anymore.

There is Peach State Detail Atlanta Car Detailing | Peach State Detail , just don't tell him you got his name from here, he hates Autogeek.

Looks good. Now, in the future, do not go to the dealership. I had similar bad experience with a Ford dealership. Took it to them for a simple repair, based upon some good reviews they had, and they managed to carve it a good one.

Pick a shop that has a good reputation for high end cars.

I was under the impression that unless I had a BMW, Merc or Porsche that I would get crappy sub-par work at a dealership. Your post has proved that it exists everywhere regardless of the vehicle make.

Glad it's sorted and you're happy with the work. Looks like it came out great!
