I have a Corolla Also.
I would suggest using paint thinner to get the sap off, then clay bar the paint. I have never had any problems using paint thinner. I have a cedar tree that drips sap during the summer over my driveway. Drives me nuts! Sounds like you my have paint damage there also. Take it one step at a time. Hang in there you will learn a lot in the forum.
