Need some advice.

Hi there, I have a 2003 sierra as a second vehicle, just got it. Very minimal body rust on inside of doors, metal is all solid. I am planning on driving it for 5 years probably, just curious what the best route is to slow down the rust from further spreading, I will run fluid film in the doors and frame etc. I know nothing will be perfect without having it professionally painted.

Sand it, neutralize it and coat it with line-X or have it done professionally? I am a weekend warrior with this stuff, not experienced in it.


Open to any other suggestions to do on it as well

When you say rust on the inside of doors, I presume your talking about the crimp area of the skin to the frame. That is usually the first place rust forms and it's caused by moisture/road chemicals between the layers of metal.

If that is the case there's not a lot that can be done. If it were me I'd remove the interior door panel and hit the seam between the skin and the frame with some oil. The oil will penetrate the seam (and existing rust) to slow its progress. That's about all you can do to slow the rust migration.

For a permanent repair you have to separate the layers of metal and either sandblast and/or acid etch to remove every last trace of the rust and then re-crimp the panels. Whenever I did this type of repair I would use fiberglass resin during the crimping process to seal the area and prevent future rusting.

Try using Rust Reformer clear spray on those areas and keep it clean. If you can live with a little rust that's great and if not you can always give it a light coating of paint but ultimately the cancer of rust as it's known will come back. I would focus primarily on preventing it long term and keeping the exterior looking great.
