Need some help..weird windshield film

problem likely lies in the holding tank in his car. In my last car I had problems and removed the tank and was shocked to find it gummed up with crap. Best I could tell it was residue from the 2x and 3x versions of Rain X fluid.

After cleaning it out and switching back to the standard blue stuff and using my above process I've had zero issues with any of our vehicles.

Interesting point. Never actually thought about or considered this.

Acetone won't harm glass. In fact, it is usually stored in glass. Acetone is a solvent for most plastics, and is usually a component of 'paint thinner'. It used to be what was in 'nail polish remover' but has largely been removed from that. Of course, the cautious car owner would nevertheless test a small spot first, just to be sure.

Acetone likely would cause damage to the plastic laminated between the glass panels of a windshield, but of course the glass is protecting the plastic. Straight acetone has the benefit of drying fairly cleanly, but depending on the quality of acetone you use, you might find streaking, but this probably is due to the contaminates in the acetone.

Naptha, often used to clean body panels prior to painting, can be used as well, and won't damage the glass either. Naptha is really good on oily residues, like hand prints, power steering fluid, motor oil, etc.
