Sorry for this being so long, read it if you can, but if not ill post short story at the bottom.

Hey guys, i havent posted on here in a long time, but i just bought a new (to me) truck about 4 months ago, and now that it is warming up outside, i want to give it a full detail. Its a 1995 F150 extended cab long bed with only 88k on it. The only downside is its 2wd, but i Got it for a great price, and couldnt pass it up.

So ive had a dark gray focus for the last 2 years, and have done a decent amount of "detailing" on it. (pep boys bought products. mothers, meguirs, etc.) But now want to get a set of nice detailing equipment because i want to start doing it for family and friends (for some dough of course :D)

I washed the truck pretty good yesterday, and when drying it, and with the sun hitting it, i could see the greenish color was almost ALL fine scratches. I tried to take some pics today, but its cloudy and they didnt show up well or at all.

Short story:
Bought a new (to me) truck, and want to give it a real good detail. has TONS of fine scratches, and want to make it like new again.

Alright, heres some pics of the truck. and descriptions/questions of each one.

The whole truck, as you can see, the greenish color on the top and bottom and white in the middle. In the green i could see the tons of scratches, but the white not so much. both colors are not very vibrant, and are slightly "faded"

This is the side panel/hood area. cant really see the scratches, but they are ALL over.

This is the rear, the metal on the tailgate is faded as well, what would you reccomend to shine that up? along with all of the other chrome on the truck?

Now this is a BIG part. the front bumper chrome is peeling off. i cant wash it without more coming off. is there a way i can stop this?? or am
i S.O.L.?

the chrome door handles seem to be pitting/and or rusting?? can i stop this/remove it somehow?

AND finally, the previous owner had a cap on the truck, and put some sort of foam tape down along the bed rails, and now that the caps off, i cant get the rest of the foam tape off. how can i?!

sorry for the long posts, but i just want this thing back to new or as new as i can possibly get it to look. being that it is 14 years old, i know that will be hard.

So what products can i use?

Im thinking of buying the poorboys/porter cable kit.
Poorboy’s Porter Cable 7424 Polish & wax Kit

Any other input thatd be great!!!!!

Thanks in advance!

PC, assortment of 4" pads, clay, Meguiars 105, Menzerna SIP, 106ff, Duragloss 501 as your cleaner (can also use it as your sealant), DG 111 or FK 1000p for your LSP, ONR has endless uses, lots of Microfiber towels

so should i just buy the PC and get polishing/paint correction products seperate?

Danny, you need a Porter Cable. People usually recommend a kit because it already includes most of the stuff you need anyways.

You probably need to do a two-step polish, so the things you need are:
Porter Cable 7424
5" Backing Plate
4" Backing Plate
5" Lake Country CCS White Pads
5" Lake Country CCS Orange Pads
4" Lake Country CCS White Pads
4" Lake Country CCS Orange Pads
Poorboy's SSR2.5
Poorboy's SSR1
Then you need a wax like Poorboy's World Natty's Paste Wax. A few coats of that wax and you should be done. Of course you can do more with your sealant and wax setup, but the Porter Cable and all those items should be fine for scratch removal.

Regarding the chrome, you need to have the parts re-chromed as there is no way to stop the peeling or pitting once it starts. Not to worry as the service is available in a lot of towns and isn't too expensive. The hardest part will be taking the parts off and putting them back on.

Is the paint single stage or clear coated?

GEWB

thanks for the help guys.

R1, as of right now, i just have some local auto store cheap stuff, but im getting a pretty decent tax return this year, and want to get some good stuff!

gewb, i was hoping someone could anwer that for me, or tell me how to find out. its a 95 f150 xlt

Bumper is shot. Needs to be redone.

Chrome is on its way to being shot. Some chrome polish can shine it up but it won't do anything for the pitting.

To check if you have single stage, which you most likely do, is to rub some paint cleaner/polish on the paint. If it pulls color from the paint onto the rag then it's single stage.

If you don't get any color pulled try another area because a vehicle of that age most likely has been repainted at some point and it may have been cleared if so.

If single stage a PC won't do a great job unless you have tons of time and patience. Try a rotary.

Not sure how you'll like this idea. I don't know how much re-chroming costs nowadays.

Years ago I had a 63 ford p/u with shot bumpers. I went to the lumber yard, got a 12 foot 2x8 rough cut oak board. Measured, cut, sanded, sanded, sanded (working from very course to extra fine sand paper) till it was nice and smooth. Can't remember the type or name of the wax I used on it (it wouldn't be sold here anyway, lol), but I got it up to a high glossy shine. Looked great.

VERY durable as the wood flexes when hit as the Mazda that rear-ended me found out.

Just an idea

perfesor, thats actually not a bad idea. theres also an auto salvage yard about a half hour away that i thought about checking out

ok sao i just went out and on the roof, i clay barred a small 6"x6" spot. then did a some scratch x 2, then meguires deep crystal polish (my other car was dark grey, had it left over), than a coat of nxt wax. Through all that, i did it all by hand, and did not see any color come off onto the microfiber.

the small area feels so smooth now. if you un your fingers over the roof, it makes like a sort of scratching sound? thats the best i can describe it, but when you hit that spot, its smooth, and makes no noise.

so do i have single stage?

alright cool, so will i be able to use a PC and such?

I'd try it in a few other spots as well, just to be sure. Did the roof look just like the rest of the body paint? (not including the spot you did)

yes all the paint looks the same. just kind of "dull" not very shiny. tried it on another spot, the side panel, just below the rear window, and it did exactly the same thing.

so am i good to go with a PC?
