My turn to vent a little...

One of our neighbors is... something else...

Six weeks ago he decided to re-pave his driveway. No big deal, it's gonna be done in a week at most, i tell myself. But not quite!

After six weeks, it's still not even halfway done. He hired some "friends" and, seriously, i've never done any landscaping and im pretty sure i could get it done in a couple weeks with the proper tools and a bit of common sense.

These guys... they are 3-4 guys and they don't have a clue. The driveway is going to be paved with bricks. When you cut bricks, you use a table for all the sawing, measure once (or twice) and cut once and then it fits, right? Also the table can have water sprays to reduce the dust, right? They developped their own method... First, they eyeball the measures, then they set a brick on the ground, hold it down with a foot, pick up the saw with both hands and then they grind the brick. With the saw blade spinning 2 inches away from their foot! Then they set the brick in its spot, obviously it doesn't fit, so they grind it some more!

The dust has been flying for 6 weeks now, piling up on our cars, probably destroying the gleaming finish i put so much work into. Oh and they don't wear masks, nice way to get silicosis. This dust is horrible stuff.

I can't wash the cars, what's the point, they'll be covered in caustic dust again in less than 24 hours. I can't even clean the interiors, all the dust is going to blow in... Not even mentionning what it would do to my lungs...

And after 6 weeks, what did they get done, you ask? Oh, they did the side walls and a flight of 4 stairs... They are still shifting piles of dirty gravel aimlessly. Their gravel is an exclusive mix of 50% rock and 50% dirt. When the snow melts next spring, this stuff will turn to mud and destroy everything.

Speaking of snow, i'm seriously starting to wonder if i'll ever be able to apply winter protection before it starts snowing... Or even wash it once...

Sounds like those guys I had working on my house some years ago. And I can believe they got their butts chased all the way up to Canada, too!

Are there two or three brothers in the group, by any chance? If there are, ask them if they learned to do step flashing yet. Tell them it goes on like shingles, you don't put the open end facing up the roof...

WWWOOOOWWWW!!!!! I'm sorry to hear this. Have you talked to your neighbor yet?

There's no point talking to him, he's just as clueless. When the guys go home at the end of the day, sometimes he comes out with a shovel and undoes some of the work because he doesn't agree with it... They argue a lot. And loud, sounds like spanish, which i don't understand... That's why i say they are "friends" lol

Your neighbor's rights stop at your property line. Tell them to take more care or call the authorities. Take pictures. Maybe a claim for damages will get this on track. Good luck.

:iagree:I agree with this. I'd be PISSED.

Ya, we are pissed. But it's not the first time we've had to deal with weird stuff from him, and to be honest, we learned it's not worth it to confront him, it achieves nothing. And calling the authorities seem like the best way to make an enemy, and we don't want to find out what other horrors he can conjure up.

Maybe i'll park my car the next street over and walk lol...

You would think after 6 weeks of trial & error they would at least have an idea of what to do. Just for fun you could make an anonymous call to the town. There may be nothing they can do about the dust but maybe there's a permit violation??? I understand not wanting to make an enemy especially since you live next door but it doesn't sound like he's a friend to begin with.

We're usually on good terms, except when he starts one of his projects, we just keep quiet because it would ramp up fast... I'll do a bit of research.

I guess it's not so different in CAN from here in the US--all you need to call yourself a contractor is enough money to print some business cards and/or flyers...

Wait--they spoke Spanish?? Maybe it wasn't those guys who worked on my house--maybe it was the OTHER guys who worked on my drain, the drain that's higher than the rest of the driveway. So now I don't have a puddle in my driveway anymore, I have a puddle with a drain sticking up in the middle...

Have I mentioned I hate contractors?

Sorry about your predicament. Certainly sucks. I would call the town. If there is a permit violation and the town comes down they don't have to say you are the one who called (assuming there are other neighbors as well).

The way they are cutting the bricks does sound like how a lot of landscapers do it here. If they knew what they were doing I would make much quicker work of it. But 6 weeks for a driveway is ridiculous. I can see a week may be but that's ridiculous.

Trade ya neighbors. Mine is a psycho. lol He's a few bricks shy.

Haha! No but we can tell. Hiring a contractor always seems like a gamble. Even when you hire one with a good reputation you might end up with one bad worker who destroys what the team would usually do pretty well.

If you want something done right you have to do it yourself. Unfortunatly thats not always possible lol

What's a neighbor?

TL <--- there's a reason I live back in the middle of 5 heavily wooded acres

Call Mike Holmes!! Isn't he like the 2nd most trusted Canadian? And a contractor!

If indeed they are calling themselves contractors are they licensed, paying for liability insurance, workers comp, taxes, etc. How are they being paid, hourly,by day, contract or is your neighbor being ripped off by unlicensed guys.I would ask your neighbor if he's getting it done for free and tell him if not maybe he's paying these guys too much.It always comes down to money and you get what you pay for.
Sorry you're in the middle of all this.

Ken

Thats exactly what I did when my next door neighbors landscaping took forever . Every morning my van would be covered in dirt even though I had washed it the day beforeFinally got smart and parked far away from them!
