New: 1-Pad Polishing System from Lake Country

Look what came special delivery today... the new final production 1-Pad Polishing System from Lake Country.

1padsystem001.jpg

Eric Dunn and Lake Country set us two sets of everything, one set to test out and one set to take to SEMA so if you're going to SEMA be sure to stop by the Autogeek Booth and check them out...

Autogeek at SEMA Information

Note: The target market for this new pad system is for high-end detailers that tend to only use new clean pads for each detailing project they tackle. There is a learning curve to this new pad/backing plate system but once you get accustomed to the thinner foam pad with the cushioned backing plate you can achieve results like a pro.

Here's the complete 1 Pad System but it's actually two lines in one... there's the 1-Pad System which includes the wool pads and the CCS Foam Pads with a *New* Hybrid Orange Cutting pad and there's the two pad, Hydro-Tech foam pad system for people that love the Hydro-Tech foam formulas.

The Two Pad, Hydro-Tech foam Pad System
1padsystem004.jpg

The entire system is patented and centers, (no pun intended), around the unique patented Tri-Density "Cushioned" Plate.
1padsystem005.jpg

The upper yellow backing is high density foam, the black core is medium density foam and the red face is low density foam.

1padsystem007.jpg

The backing plate is very flexible...
1padsystem008.jpg

1padsystem009.jpg

The red low density foam is very soft and pliable...
1padsystem010.jpg

It also compresses easily under pressure...
1padsystem011.jpg

1padsystem012.jpg

Total width of the backing plate is approximately 1 1/4"
1padsystem013.jpg

The Velcro interface measures approximately 5 3/4" in diameter and the overall width is approximately 6 1/2" in diameter.
1padsystem014.jpg

1padsystem015.jpg

Turning the pads over you can see the form fitting shape
1padsystem016.jpg

The Velcro Interface on the back of the wool cutting pads measures approximately 4 3/4" in diameter.
1padsystem017.jpg

Here again you can see the bowel shape design of the back of the pads that helps to self-center the pads onto the backing plate.
1padsystem018.jpg

The hook-n-loop interface measures approximately 3 5/8" in diameter.

Here's some pictures of the new Hybrid Cutting Pad next to the Tangerine Hydro-Tech Polishing Pad, note the darker color. This pad with a cutting compound is said to be able to remove down to #1500 grit sanding marks and polish out LSP ready...
(Personal preference of course as to what LSP ready is)

This is a hybrid pre-polymer specially designed for Lake Country. It is more aggressive than our standard orange foam formula. Eric says this is a very unique foam pad that he thinks is really going to become popular.

Here's the backing plate mounted attached to a Flex 603 Rotary Buffer...

Here's the pad attached to the backing plate...
1padsystem026.jpg

The actual diameter of the working portion of the face of the pads measures right around 6"
1padsystem027.jpg

1padsystem028.jpg

The high radius sides help insure that you don't run the backing plate or non-buffing portion of the buffing pad into any raised body lines or edges...

There have been some improvements to the pads and especially the backing plate since we shot this video.

Coming soon...

Nice concept and pads look promising too......great, more new thing that I must have.....it never ends...That is why I love this Business.

one time use...........that could get expensive for the detailer

What is the projected $$

No doubt, I hope they're cheap.

I didn't get that information... I suspect a lot of people will re-use them... I just posted the information that came with the pads...

Kind of fun when you get to work in the morning and there's a mystery box on your desk...

I'll try to do some sanding and buffing test tomorrow if time allows... supposed to get some more mystery boxes in tomorrow...

:D

Cheap, as in 25 cents each OR LESS. By the time I throw away a regular pad I have gotten at least 100 uses out of it. Maybe even more.

I sent the link to this thread to Eric Dunn so I'm sure he'll value everyone's feedback.

That's something that is incredibly valuable to companies with staff wise enough to listen to end-users...

Being that the 1-Pad System is marketed to those detailers that already treat normal pads as one-time-use, this will likely be a great savings at any price reduction. If you do everything you can to get the longest life from your pads, these might not be a good option. We'll see once they are released...

I like the idea of the backing plate providing consistent pressure. The thick foam of normal pads tends to "soften up" after a few passes. I could see an advantage with 1-Pad there.

I am definitely interested to see how the new orange pad cuts and finishes. How flexible are the pads themselves?

Also, I am very curious as the the pad's durability. I know this is not a design point, but would they stand up to a couple dozen washings?

Will the new hybrid orange pads be available in their regular pad lineup or just the 1 pad system?

I am very interested in this. I kinda like the knew design and as Mike shows from his video works great when your working those slight curved areas. I would keep a set of these for just areas like that.

In the video, if you watch I throw a little splatter when I pick up my bead of product using the The 10 @ 10 technique for picking up a bead of product with a rotary buffer

What I learned from using these new pads was that because of their curved, bowl shape, you need to pick up your bed of product at the 9 O'clock position instead of the 10 O'clock position.

Picking up your strip of product at the 10 O'clock position will throw splatter
1pad10at9_001t.jpg

Instead, pick up your bead or strip of product at the 9 O'clock position
1pad10at9_002t.jpg

The reason for this is because only about 6" in diameter of the face of the pad is in contact with the paint, not the entire face. So if you run your buffer over the bead or strip of product like you would normally do using the 10 @ 10 Technique, you'll be missing the bead because there's no foam at that point in contact with the paint.

A little tip for anyone in the future that gets these pads and picks there bead of product up on the fly using the 10 @ 10 Technique.

Here's a few pictures of the results from removing #1500 Unigrit Sanding Marks using the new Hybrid Dark Orange 1-Pad.

Back section of hood sanded with #1500 Unigrit Sanding Disc (not foam backed)
1padtest01.jpg

Center swath was compounded using the new Hybrid pad and M105 at approximately 1400 RPM for about 12 single passes.
1padtest02.jpg

Finished the entire section off using a wool cutting pad for maximum efficiency
1padtest03.jpg

Comments...
This new Hybrid Foam Cutting pad removed 98% of the sanding marks, only a few tale-tale signs of sanding on the surface and you can see by the pictures the results were very glossy but there was still some surface haze left. I only made about 12 passes to test the the pad, I could have buffed more but instead switched over to a wool pad.

While you can use this pad to cut out sanding marks it's still faster and more efficient to use a good quality wool cutting pad.

I will work great for pulling out medium to light swirls and scratches and finishing out LSP ready or close to LSP ready depending upon the paint itself and your expectations and criteria.

hopefully there relatively cheap maybe a dollar or 2 a pad.. Otherwise this could get pretty expensive fast if they were 6-8 dollars a pad.

I would buy at maybe $4 to $5 a pad, Mike was that orange pad the hydro pad?

Looking forward to seeing them at SEMA Mike :xyxthumbs:

I totally agree this is the kind of system for High End detailers who always start with a fresh wash mitts, pads and microfiber for each job. If you are charging top dollar for your services the cost should not be a factor.

well considering your going to atleast need 2 of each pad per car your looking at purchasing 4-6 pads maybe more so your already looking at $30 + Shipping to start this one detailing job.

Personally I hear peoples pads lasting over 100 uses.. If its clean I say why not.. Just wash it thoroughly after each use. so far I have had no problems.

We'll see you there!

Not the one you see me using to remove sanding marks, that's the Hybrid Pad, it's a new foam formula, but not exactly like the Hydro-Tech foam formula. I'll see Eric Dunn at SEMA and get some more information.

For what it's worth, it did pull out the #1500 sanding marks fairly easily and polish to a high gloss but keep in mind, the paint on this 1964 is a repaint and all paint systems are going to buff differently.

So this was just a sort of demonstration and test of the pad based upon what Eric told me over the phone in that they've used it to remove down to #1500 grit sanding marks.

In the real world I would never finish out at #1500 Unigrit Sanding Discs but would at a minimum finish out with the #3000 Foam backed Finishing Discs. Of course if this pad, M105 and a dozen single passes pulled #1500 then it's logical to conclude that it would pull #3000 even easier and faster.

And this is good feed back for the manufacture.
