So 2 weeks ago my g/f was asking about cars, great, love those conversations, so we got to it. I started with the KIA Sportage & Seltos, she wants nothing to do with Hyundai based off of what her cousin who's a mechanic once said and yours truelys issues, go figure

Watching reviews is one thing, she actually wanted to look so we decided on 2...Subaru Crosstrek and VW Taos, there's 3 dealers in a row, the 3rd is Mazda and for whatever reason she's not about Mazda, I tried because the CX-30 is REALLY sharp, she even comments on how awesome Soul Red is but I digress

So Subaru was first, 2024 Crosstrek premium. I told her about the CVT and not to worry about how it doesn't shift, just focus on the drive and feel. The test drive was rather short but she liked it and honestly, Subaru has stepped up the interior (low bar to be sure but nice now). The offer for her Cruze was fair, she had money to put down and payment was less than she budgeted, all good there. We went to lunch to talk it over, went back and told them we had 2 more dealerships to go to and we'd be in touch...on to VW

We walked into the VW dealership and they had a "smurf blue" Taos right there inside...with a battery jumper on it. The manager put us with a salesman where he told us all about the Taos and pulled a Taos out for us to test drive and we went out. I told Amy that this is 100% different than the Crosstrek, more lux, turbocharged I4/7 spd DCT vs. NA flat 4/CVT, plus more sport tuned suspension...I knew deep down inside after going down the road she LOVED IT over the Subbie. We go back to the dealership and crunch numbers...same trade in price for the Cruze, plus $1500 VW cash, plus he money down, same payment as the Crosstrek but 1 less year financing, plus extended warranty that covers the 6 years financed...SIGN AND DRIVE and that's what we did

It was a long day, got home late and she was happy, actually over the past weeks she's REALLY liking the Taos even more! The day after we got it I noticed a ding in the p/s quarter panel, it was dark when we got the car, should've done an inside delivery but we txt'd the salesman the next day, with pics and no problem, their fixing it, we made the appointment for the 29th of this month as the PDR guy is only there once a week, she'll be getting a rental

I've driven it quite a bit and I like it, great low-end/mid-range power, definitely tuned like that, where it counts most. It's also 4Motion, ofcoarse and per the salesman it's an older Quattro system in its design/function. The model is officially the Taos SE 4Motion, has everything she wanted. Sure the SEL has a couple upgrades that are nice (larger, better lookin' rims/leather/panoramic roof/upgraded stereo/better speedo layout (I think) but still, these new cars come pretty well equipped. I love the heated steering wheel/seats, how it drives as it's "taut", basically a "fat Golf" as I've heard it referred to and sadly a replacement for the icon they say (truely sad when this day happens)

Being German there's usually not alot of actual color choices but besides the staples available there's a nice cranberry red, smurf blue and Amy's color...Dusk Blue and it's truely a beautiful color, a guy next to us at The Bays with a sharp white Audi S5 Sportback complimented her on the color...cool

So...there's the story of how the Taos came to be, originally we were just looking and then she decided to get it, that's how it happens sometimes and she's got NO REGRETS on the purchase, likes it more than anything else and that's when you know you made the right choice

Up next is today's first detail, I'm calling it a "band-aid" detail because it's just enough to get it through the winter, come spring it's getting "the treatment", plan on booking a full day or close to it at The Bays but for now, enjoy the pics coming up the next post...thank you

I'll start with a pic of the products used today. I forgot to take a pic of the ADS Tire+ AND Brake Buster together, plus the aftermath of the products once rinsed away, I'm sorry about that, I was too busy explaining things to Amy, got distracted

Once all 4 tires & wheeks rinsed clean I moved to the pre-wash. For this I used ADS Decon soap, 2:1 (14 oz water/7 oz soap) and sorry, no pics of that. I'll also comment that the tire/wheel pics are not in succession or the same ones, missing the rinse and application of Pure:est S1 to them, it just doesn't translate in pics but the beading was great using this product and the smell of men's cologne was AWESOME, Pure:est is a sleeper brand

Once the pre-wash was rinsed away we turned our attention to the 2BM wash. For this I finished off my bottle of Bilt-Hamber AutoWash, a super concentrated carwash, because I had 2 oz left I used it all...complete overkill, 1 oz was more than enough, GREAT GREAT carwash, can't say enough about it but then again it's Bilt-Hamber...what do you expect

After the 2BM wash completed I turned my attention to the protection and for this I used 2 different products, Pure:est S1 for the wheels, faces and barrels and ADS EZ Beads for the entire car. These 2 couldn't be easier to use and REALLY produced the results needed on this unprotected and stripped paint surface, REALLY beaded and made the beautiful paint POP! I used the EGO Blower to dry the Taos, for the most part and we moved the car to the detail area and away from wash bay area

Once over here we got after it, Amy cleaned the inside glass with CarPro Clarify and treated the interior with DIY Detail Interior Clean and Protect, took out the WeatherTechs and vac'd it out and sprayed Griot's Garage Stinky Be Gone Redline cherry scent inside.

My job was to apply CarPro Clarify Phobics to all exterior glass, ADS Ghost to the tires, 2 coats with proper time inbetween, Adam's WW for the cleaning of the WeatherTechs and general touching up areas around the car so it looked it's very best...3 hrs later we were done

The pic after the tire & wheel cleaning shows the flat water on the hood, flat as Nebraska, nothing left!

Next post are the "beauty shots", stay "tuned"....

Beauty shots...

Thank you if you made it through all this and guess what...1-3" of snow predicted tomorrow but atleast it's protected and now the touch-free wash I go to is responsible for "maintaining" the Taos...oh yeah, my car too (see my "Tuned" thread for more about that)

Came out nice, Klasse. Where does the water go in that wash area, after it goes through the Racedeck flooring?

Also do I see stacks of tires in the one pic? Are they storing people's summer wheels/tires?

Each of the 3 wash Bays has its own drain under there and the owners a car guy so those might be his or some friends.

Thanks for the compliment, never thought a VW would be in the mix but here we are, sometimes these things happen like that

Nice looking vehicle, and that is the right color! You two did a great job cleaning it up!

How do you like the griots cherry air freshener?

Sorry I asked more questions about "the Bays" than the Taos, I'm still trying to figure out how to make something like that work as a business venture.

What is the ground clearance like on those mini SUV's? I notice some of them, don't really have the clearance you'd expect from an AWD vehicle, as that SUV "look" has now become a styling element. For instance, the Ioniq 5 that came up in another thread doesn't really seem to have that much ground clearance.

Not that there aren't tons of AWD sedans that don't have any more ground clearance than their FWD/RWD siblings.

No worries about the Bays questions, maybe it's something you can make happen! The Bays have a franchise opening near St. Louis fairly soon, maybe contact Jason at the Bolingbrook location or Wheeling and find out some details.

As far as ground clearance it's 7.6", I believe the Crosstrek is 8-9". The Taos is a small SUV but compared to what was "small" 5-8 years ago, it's larger and certainly does feel small and bigger than the Crosstrek, Amy noticed this straight away, played a factor into her decision for sure

7.6" ground clearance for the Taos and 8.7" for the Crosstrek but the Crosstrek Wilderness has 9.3", definitely for those who really need it like true off-roaders and areas that get real snow

Btw since I was inside yesterday and the Taos would be sitting for a couple hours I took advantage to properly set the tires psi and I'm glad I did, each one was at 36 psi (41 psi is recommended). Now it's about to get colder so I set each tire to 43 psi to compensate for the upcoming cold...oh yeah, we've got snow coming but thankfully not like what's going to hit about 4-5 hrs south of us

Very nice colour, but then I do like blues. I watched a test of the Taos on The Fast Lane Car only yesterday, it was the smurf blue colour you mentioned. They were doing their slip test, showing how VW had improved it since the last time.

I also like to wait to check air pressures till either has been inside for a couple of hours. Because our driveway faces north, the pressure can vary side to side depending on if it's morning or afternoon.

Quite the upgrade from the Cruze!

As you know, I'm a color person..................it can make or break a car for me. That blue is superb, sets off all the chrome to perfection and contrasts well with the black trim. I also love the machined face wheels with the black inner spokes.

I'll let Amy know, she couldn't be happier with everything about this Taos as it's the nicest car she's ever had

Out in the sun that metalflake was poppin', can't wait to do a real detail on it, then it will REALLY pop

My plan for that real detail is the usual chemical/mechanical decon, strong pre-wash and equally strong 2BM wash. For coating I'm going to go with ADS Phobic, mainly because I've already got it and I'd like to see what this product can really do. Yes it's not as stout as Quartz but I'm curious because knowing ADS I bet this product is an "over achiever". One thing I'm skipping is polishing the roof, I find it pointless on an SUV and besides, I'm 5'6" and don't have the reach and I don't wanna risk trying to reach because of potential damage because I can't get proper angle/pressure applied

I'm planning on booking a full 8 hr day at The Bays for her full detail, using my regular 3 hrs as well as the 4 hrs she bought me for Christmas, thus only needing to pay my special rate of $22.00 for 1 hour

Dave...thank you for bringing up that video, I'm watching now, just showed the slip test...it did it! I wasn't too sure at first but after a couple attempts...YES!

Because our snow fall isn't quite what it used to be, although at any given time.... these tires should get the job done and they're rated for 65K (I never even try to get every mile out of tires, just not smart )

I'm going to try and keep up with your levels of BLUE goodness

Maybe missed it but nothing temporary to protect the paint? I saw where you said you would use Phobic in near future.

Yeah I applied ADS EZ Beads to the Taos and Pure:est S1 to the wheels, inside and out, also ADS Ghost 2x's to the tires

Great job. I'm planning to visit The Bays sometime this month.

What touchless car wash do you use? Thanks.
