New alternative to halogen lighting?

While browsing the new items on the Harbor Freight site I noticed that they now carry a LED work light, similar looking to a typical 500 watt halogen. It looks like a good idea, maybe save electricity, won't get as hot, don't have to replace bulbs, but does anyone think it'll be able to show defects as effectively?

I think you gotta be the first .... just remember we are all waiting !

Funny :). Actually I may be stopping by a HF tomorrow to check out the Collinite and other items, I'll have to see if they have any in stock. I have one of those hand held LED lights and it's bright at night but haven't used it to check paint defects yet (x-mas present).

I couldn't get the gallery to open to post pic, but when you go to
HF pick up one of the rechargeable sprayers($11.99)--I have 10, and use
for all my liquid products. Use the light green tip for instant detailers--
the mist is superfine--think you'll like it.

I was wondering how bright they are.

I checked the link and it states 168 lumens. That is quite low. A typical incandescent 60W bulb is 840 lumens.

I want a nice LED worklight (like for changing oil too) but it does not seem like LED technology is there yet.

I too have a few of those sprayers. They are nice for all products. Also you can refill them with air and reuse. Im the MAN Oh mine were $5 apiece.

Thanks Bunky. I wasn't sure about the lumens, thanks for the information.

In conjunction with other's reports, I don't think that'd throw off enough of a wide area light to be useful to work with.... might be real handy for inspections though. My GF came by just as I was finishing a detail on her black SUV for some fresh batteries in her LED flashlight. When she turned it on the beam hit a hard-to-reach corner around the license plate and she sez "OH! Look at those scratches!" ::::: grrrr, urge to kill::::::

The LED revealed some swirls that weren't readily visible with the halogens. You can bet yer ass I've got my own LED flashlight now dedicated to final inspections...

Holy crapola, this is very affordable. Maybe worth it. But I too have an LED flashlight for spot-checking or final inspection.

I went by HF to pick one up just to check it out, and they aren't in
stock at my store yet--so I bought a couple more of the
rechargeable sprayers (makes 12).

if memory serves... richard aka octaneguy, has used this or similiar LED light stand. you may want to do a search at showcardetailing.com

I have 2 of those they work GREAT and less heat then 1000 watt halogens.

Any other thoughts on this? I have a handheld LED light and it can show defects that halogens sometimes cannot. But how does this thing do as far as light output? I can see this coming in hand when working in a garage that doesn't have very good lighting. 3 watts is certainly better than 500+ blasting you on a hot summer day!
