New Car Polish Procedure Question

Probably next weekend I will jewel the finish of my new Taco. The rear quarter panel has a clear protective film on the paint. I plan on taping up the film and not polishing the film. Would this be the correct process?

I have never had a vehicle with protective film before.

A friend of mine that owns and installs the protective film. Said to just tape around the film, and not to polish it. Because you start to remove the top protective coating on the film. And will make it discolor faster.
