Coatings are great and offer the most amount of protection for the longest periond of time, but they require the paint to be almost perfect as they will seal in any imperfections. Also, there are allot of different coatings and each offers different advantages in looks and durability (2-5+years) which would require you doing some research before you decide which one.
In the meantime I assume you want to get some protection on the car asap so a good, durable sealant would be the way to go offering 4-6 months protection before you apply another coat. Wash the car, decontaminate it with something like IronX, give it a light claying being careful to not induce any marring and then give it a coat of sealant.
For a great price with good durability you could go with Duragloss 105 or Megs Ulimate Liquid Wax (it's really a sealant) both are available OTC. There is also Optimum OptiSeal which is a wipe on walk away sealant (no buffing) tops for ease of application. Menzerna Powerlock is another great sealant as are any of the Collinite products (845, 476, 915) that do an excellent job at protecting your finish.
