New car swirls

Mike I tried looking at the article on best temperatures and I am getting this error message

"you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:
  1. Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
  2. If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation. "

I get the same message.

Fixed it.

I did a search for the article because I'm not sure if I added it to my article list and I copied the link to the version in the Rough Draft forum group, which like the "Moderators" forum group is out of the public site.

I fixed the link so when you click on it you'll go to the public version of the thread and I'll now delete the version in the Rough Draft forum group.

Sorry for the hassle...

:D

Is this the same model or different ? Griot's Garage 10765LNGCRD 6-Inch Random Orbital Polisher

I was looking today on the site to purchase the Meguiars polisher when I came across the Griots Garage, any recommendations of one over the other Pros/Cons ? I noticed the Griots has an adjustable Bale Handle which is a nice feature ! Also is the Griots polisher a DA type polisher ?

Griot's Garage 6 inch Random Orbital Polisher, Dual action buffer, DA polisher

Yes, same type of tool. Most people, including myself remove the handle and never look back. The tool is easier to control when your hand is directly on the head of the polisher. The further away your hand is from the tool the more it will wear out your muscles to control it.

See this article,

Handle? Or No Handle? - Using DA Polishers Without the Handle

The topic of handles on DA Polishers comes up from time to time and in all my classes I show how to use these tools with and without the handles and leave it up to each person to decide which approach works best. Regardless of which approach you prefer, the handle can affect Pad Rotation so check out the below information and then do some experimenting with your DA Polisher and see which approach works best for you.

The benefit to using a DA Polisher without the handle
The benefit to using these types of polishers without handles is that most people would agree that it give you better control over the polisher, better control over the pad and it requires less energy to use the polisher thus reducing fatigue. Reducing fatigue is important because buffing out an entire car requires anywhere from an average of 4 to 12 hours.

Keeping the pad flat to the surface
When using a DA Polisher it's important to keep the pad flat to the surface and the reason for this is it helps to maintain pad rotation and it's when the pad is rotating that defects are removed.

If you hold the polisher so that the pad is on edge, or if you apply more pressure to one side of the head of the polisher than the other, you can stop the pad from rotating and at this point you will no longer be removing defects.

Bail Handle - Meguiar's and Griot's Polishers
The benefit to the Bail Handle is it enables you to apply pressure directly over the head of the polisher and this helps you to keep the pad completely flat against the surface.

The drawback to a Bail Handle is it extends your hand away from the head of the polisher and this can cause you to expend more energy and tire your forearm muscles controlling the polisher. It also reduces your control over the movement of the polisher.

This is especially true if you want to use a DA Polisher with a Bail Handle with one hand and even more true if you're trying to use a polisher with a Bail Handle with one hand on a vertical panel.

Stick Handle - Porter Cable
The benefit to the stick handle is it enables you to easily control the movement of the polisher as well helps you to maintain the pad flat to the surface.

The drawback to the stick handle is that if you're not paying attention you can easily apply too much pressure to the handle side of the polisher causing you to hold the pad crooked or on edge and this can and will slow down pad rotation and even stop pad rotation.

Risk
There are also instances that when polishing some car body styles that you can accidentally run the handle into an adjacent painted panel potentially scratching the paint.

Personal Preference
When it comes to DA Polishers, my preference is to remove any handle and simply place my hand on the head of the polisher to guide and control it. This is especially helpful when using the polisher with one hand, for example when applying a finishing wax or sealant. And even more important if you want to machine wax the vertical sides.

Below are some pictures that show the various DA Polishers with and without handles.

Here are the three popular DA Polishers with their handles removed...

With the Bail Handle removed from the Griot's Garage DA Polisher your hand fits comfortably over the plastic housing cover the head of the polisher.

If you watch the below video, you'll see me giving a young lady some hands-on training on how to use the Porter Cable 7424XP.

Note the handle is on it but I place her hand directly onto the head of the unit for training purposes. I usually show the handle but then remove it after explaining why it's better not to use it...

I'd never try M105 on a brand new car until I tried far less aggressive alternatives. The paint although having minor swirls hopefully doesn't need an aggressive compound such as M105.

Surely clay it, then do a test spot using perhaps M205 or Wolf Gang Swirl Remover, or perhaps Optimum's Polish II or Hyper Polish with an orange pad.

Sucks to have a new car is such shape. The best thing I ever did when I ordered mt new Camaro was to tell the salesman the deal is voided if anybody touches the paint for any reason...I received a really dirty car...but I was a happy camper nonetheless.

I ordered the Impreza for my wife. I told the saleman to make sure "DO NOT WASH" the car for any reason. He said that is the strangest request he ever heard. He called yesterday and said the car has arrived and he put a sign on the car stating "DO NOT WASH" :) I'm picking it up today and hope to give it a little TLC

I was going to buy either the Meguiars or Griots Garage DA polisher however I just found out today that I can get my hands on a Porter Cable 7424XP for $89.00 with free shipping.

My question is, is the Porter Cable as user friendly as the other two or do I take a bigger risk messing up my new cars finish with it versus either of the other two ?

Really?

We offer a price matching program, check it out here...

Price Match Promise

Does the supplier for the one you found also provide a fun, friendly and most of all helpful discussion forum filled with information on how to get good results with the polisher? Or do they just sell the polisher?

I see a lot of people use the Porter Cable 7424XP but I am afraid it may not be newbie proof enough for me.

No offense taken... just like to point out the benefits you get with AG and they are real benefits considering a person's time.

To answer your qustion...

The PC is the SAFEST DA Polisher money can buy. Period.

The Griot's Garage and Meguiar's versions and all over versions are knock-offs of the Porter Cable polisher.

The Porter Cable units actually have the longest time-proven record for reliability. You can drive over one with a truck, pick it up and get back to work.

Just get a 5" backing plate with it and get 5.5" foam pads and you can tackle just about anything that come your way.

Mike,

I appreciate the time you have spent answering my questions as well as others who have been involved in this thread I appreciate it very much. I will be getting the Blackfire supplies soon.

Is there any other supplies you would recommend for someone new to detailing ?

Should a mit, sponge or what be used to wash the car with ?
