New Detail shop booming

I just opened my new Shop on Monday, I thought it would start out a little slow and I'd have time to fix the shop to my liking, I mean it looks nice, a lot of room, heated, large doors but business is good, I'm very busy, people calling me all day as I work on cars.

As of now I'm booked for a while, just when I think I'll catch up people call me to put them on my schedule.
I detailed a Honda Pilot, the owner works for a large plant here, a lot of people work there, all with newer cars, one of the managers stopped by yesterday to get his truck polished, he asked for business cards to pass out at the plant.

Question..

How good are those Autogeek interior cleaning guns that connect to a large compressor ?
Is it worth getting one being I already have a steamer and a carpet extractor?

Loving my new full time business, key word, My"

Congratulations on your success!

Love reading these stories and I've been following your progress ever since you joined our forum.

Quick suggestion and remember, I make it a practice to always give due credit where credit is due, I don't see this reciprocated by some in this industry but that's there deal not mine.

So here's two tips I learned from two buddies of mine in this industry.

A business tip from Renny Doyle

Always answer your phone on the second ring.

Renny invited me to be a guest instructor at one of his seminars a few years ago and while I was there sharing information I'm always a perpetual student so I was there learning just like everyone else.

At one point in the class Renny told the class that anytime your phone rings to make it a habit to answer the phone on the second ring. Don't let it ring any longer and never let it go to voice mail because odds are too great that you will lose the customer.

So just make it a habit to always answer your phone and do so on the second ring.

A business tip from Mel Craig

I was a guest on one of Mel Craig's Detailing Pros Conference Calls where I was asked to share how I work through a day and my tip was to always have a To Do List and prioritize it and then follow it. Any task not completed during each day gets moved over to the new list for the next day. I burn through spiral ring notebooks. (This is a tip for everyone that currently doesn't use a "To Do List").

The 10 Foot Rule

During the conference call, Mel shared his 10 Foot Rule. The 10 Foot Rule goes like this,

Anyone standing within 10 feet of you should know who you are and what you do.

The above is genius especially for anyone just starting out. The point is sales is a numbers game, you tell you sell. You tell enough people who your are and what you do and sooner or later you're going to get a new customer. You make this customer happy and they tell their friends. This is called word-of-mouth advertising and it's the strongest form of advertising in the world.

And you don't stop. You learn the habit of telling anyone within 10 feet of you who you are and what you do. At some point you will become like Joe Fernandez or Derek Bemis, or David Sylican and you build up a top shelf clientele of repeat customers that your schedule is full. Once your schedule is full you don't have to use the 10 Foot Rule any longer or at least as much if you don't want to but it's an aggressive way to get started. It helps to always have a friendly smile, a confident firm handshake, a business card etc.

Now about the Tornador air tools.

By all means, get a few if you have a 60 gallon or larger air compressor. Most of these tools require a minimum of 90 PSI and 5+ CFM to function well for any length of time.

Nick's asked me to create a list of my top 10 favorite tools and these will be on it. I also show how to use these tool at all of our Detailing Boot Camp Classes.

The below are articles I've written on each tool that include pictures of the tools in action....

I love the Air Foamer and here's what really cool about it...

It will FOAM DANG NEAR ANYTHING!

And foam gives the product DWELL TIME - plus it looks cool too....

How to wash Ferrari Wheels and Tires

This is my buddy Frank who helped me detail this Ferrari which was the winner of the Autism Speak Charity Raffle at Detail Fest last year.

Frank is foaming Detailer's Wheel Cleaner and dwell time is very helpful when cleaning wheels and tires or wheel wells.

Fenderwells
Next Frank's going to get the fenderwells with some foamed Detailer's Wheel Cleaner and Mothers Fender Well Brush which has a long hand and angled brush head to make cleaning these hard to reach areas a breeze.

How to clean an engine compartment

Spray APC or Engine Degreaser on engine and inside engine compartment
I love the Tornador Air Foam Guns! Dang near anything you use with these guns will foam and that's true for Amazing Roll-Off...

800_How_To_Detail_Engine_005.jpg

Allow the foam to dwell
After spraying everything down with foam a let it soak in and penetrate any dirt or oily film and then this is key,

Agitate well with a brush

Tornador Blastor Vacuum Attachment - A Favorite Cool Tool

When I work on my own cars there's always a couple of cool tools I like to use and this is one of them, the Tornador Blastor Vacuum Attachment. The way this works is you attach the the air line to the compressed air line from your air compressor. You need a powerful air compressor with a minimum of 60 to 90 PSI to feed the tool. You attach the vacuum attachment to the hose of your shop-vac.

Tornador_Blastor_Vacuum_Attachment_001.jpg

Tornador_Blastor_Vacuum_Attachment_002.jpg

Compressed air forces the oscillating tip to oscillate while at same time it's blasting air out of the tip to create the tornado effect.

Tornador_Blastor_Vacuum_Attachment_003.jpg

Tornador_Blastor_Vacuum_Attachment_004.jpg

Now you have the Tornador Blastor Vacuum Attachment blasting air at the surface in a violent tornado action while your vacuum extracts everything. It can be a little hard to wrap your mind around in that how can you effectively vacuum while at the same time you're blowing air away from the opening of the vacuum attachment but it works and it works great!

Let me put it this way... if I"m going to do any vacuuming, I will attach the Tornador Blastor Vacuum Attachment first and then vacuum away.

Yeah... love these tools.... highly recommend them...

Also, if you read through this write-up you'll read where I used the Tornador Air Blow Out Gun to simply blow out the interior. Never used a vacuum once. This won't work for every car but it will work for some cars. I also use this to blow out my wife's Mercedes-Benz as she never really gets the inside dirt so this tool just BOOM blows it out clean. Also use it in the trunk and always use it for engine compartments.

Heck I blow out my artificial leg with it! (It gets dusty)

I only charged this guy $100.00 per hour so 4 hours = $400.00 not bad for production detailing and I didn't even do the roof.

:D

Some great tools! Thanks Mike.

And i'm excited for you, HateSwirls! Congratulations on what sounds like a very successful start. What i have done over the years to progress both my results and reduce the amount of time to get those results is to evaluate 2 things whenever changing methods or procedures: 1.) does it yield better results? And 2.) is it faster to complete?

Those tools above would satisfy both questions and for a business venture, in my mind, would be investments because they would yield more cash in the long run. I still use my Mytee extractor and would most likely still use it given Mike's tool suggestions. I don't have a steamer but again, apply those 2 questions i've suggested to evaluate replacing it with Mike's equipment.

Thanks again, Mike.

A tornador is THE magic wand for an engine bay; both for applying APC/degreaser and for applying dressings. I clean my engine bay twice a year in about 10 minutes, nasty ones take 15-20 with a little extra wiping and scrubbing. You are also using way less product compared to a spray bottle. To be clear, I am referring to the Z-010 and Z-020. To me it's way safer than a hose or pressure washer.

I do still use the tornador on interiors from time to time, and depending on the severity of the door jambs, that's another place I may ramp up from steam to Tornador. Because the cleaner gets aerosolized, I'm not a huge fan of going crazy with it on the interior where I'm going to be breathing it in, I generally go for steam.

I'm so happy to hear of your success, HS!

Mike, that is some golden information you shared. Thank you!

This is awesome to hear Kevin! Love hearing about fellow Louisiana folks do well and the economy their supporting folks. I grew up in Baton Rouge and Livingston Parish, and my dad is a machinist in Baton Rouge. So I know what a struggle it can be and how the economy can be slow.
Is your new shop located in Lafayette? And do you have employees?
If you have the money to invest in the Tornador tools and have employees I would definitely make the investment. Like stated, if you can see them improving the methods you use now, and safe time to increase profits, then it's a win-win situation. Especially with the volume you state is coming your way. If you have employees and train the on how to properly and efficiently use the tools then it can really speed things up, and reduce some liability opposed to steam and scrubbing on interiors. Good time of year to invest in some new tools/toys too.:)
Well, do you have any pics of the new shop? And does your website and social media reflect/indicate your new shop and location?

Mike, how effective is the Tornador Blaster vacuum tool on removing sand/fine debris from carpets/floor mats, and seams and crevices on seats? If it is as effective as steam, yet safer than scrubbing, then I am sold. Thanks for sharing, as always, Mike.

Nice work HateSwirls! that is awesome that business is taking off so fast. You're obviously doing something (or a lot of things) right and it's paying off nicely for you. Hopefully it keeps up for you through the winter months.

Mike - Thanks for that great advice. It's always nice to get refreshed on some good business advice and even better when it comes from such a great source in our industry like you. When I move my business this spring from Seattle to Central Oregon, I'll be sure to using many of these types of tips when restarting in the new location. Very valuable info and thanks for sharing!

Thank you very much Mike, you explained it very well.

Pick up on second ring?
That's a problem I'm having right now, I have the LG G2 phone, you have to tap it twice to wake it up, it doesn't fair well when my fingers are wet.
Only thing I can think of is to start wearing rubber gloves, that way I can remove them quickly and answer my phone.

Retired man stopped by today with his wife's brand new car, he told me he didn't know of a "Detailer" in the area , I told him I just opened full time, so now I have his business,he also owns a new truck.
Word of mouth is a wonderful thing.

Thanks again,
Kevin

I'm an hour north of Lafayette.
As of now I don't have anyone working with me, however it seems I may have to find someone in a few months, that part of the business worries me because I'd have to depend on someone on a very busy day.

I'll be placing an order here soon for a few tools to benefit from.

Thanks everyone for the support and all the help that you guys give here each day, not one detailer knows it all, well, not me for sure:)
I've learned a lot here of the past year or so.

Get a Bluetooth :xyxthumbs: no matter what your doing, just tap the earpiece and talk (bare hands, gloves, whatever) you also won't miss calls while buffing or vacuuming since you'll always hear the phone ring right into your ear. Definitely a worthy investment for your dollars.

Exactly what I was thinking!

congrats on your success! Do you have a website? Also, any type of marketing prior opening shop? Thanks.

Congratulations on the shop and the success. I went to one of the Autogeek bootcamps and the tornador car cleaning gun was one of those tools that made me say wow i am getting one of those. I did and absolutely love it. You can clean everything with it and it always impresses customers when they see it in action.

Now why didn't I think of that!
Thanks, I'll get one today:dblthumb2:
