I just bought the PC 7224xp with some accessories from autogeek. I consider myself a novice, but I do take care of my vehicles. I plan on using what I got in the "kit" for the first itme. If someone could take a look at my approach to this I wold appreciate it. My plan on my 2007 Maxima is to wash and then clay bar it first. Next use a grey foam pad and the Pinnacle XMT Fine Swirl Remover #2 and finish with a white pad and the Pinnacle XMT Carnauba Finishing Glaze.

Does this sound appropriate?
Should I then use a "wax" on the car?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Welcome to AGO!

Try the white pad with XMT #2 and the gray with XMT Glaze. You need protection on the car whether you use wax or a sealant (or both).

Protection? wouldn't the carnuba wax provide that?

The Finishing Glaze? It has some but, unless it is a garage queen, it still needs a good wax or sealant.

The Carnauba Finishing Glaze is a wax, it's a cleaner/wax. It has the word "glaze" in it but there are no "Laws" on what words are used on product labels to describe what they are.

Lots of waxes use the word "Polish" to describe what they are when in fact they are not a polish but a wax.

Some day the government will put a tax on car wax and then create a bureaucracy to police words used on car waxes.

From this page,

Pinnacle XMT Carnauba Finishing Glaze

Pinnacle XMT Carnauba Finishing Glaze is a sophisticated blend of gentle cleaners and rich carnauba wax.

The definition of a cleaner/wax or an AIO is a product that,

  • Cleans
  • Polishes (glazes)
  • Protects

The name implies it "finishes" that is it tops the paint off with a layer of protection, and it glazes, it creates a highly polished appearance.

But at it's core, it's both cleaning and protecting.

The Carnauba Finishing Glaze is a wax but if you like you can apply a non-cleaning wax afterwards with the theory being since a non-cleaning wax is all wax you'll leave more protection behind.

It's one of many articles on my article page.

There are lots of articles on using a DA Polisher and I also have a book out that's dedicated towards DA Polishers.

Thanks for the reply's. I have been watching so many videos with you (Mike) that I think I may know you already. Thanks for the help.

Also, any recommendation on wax? I have used Mcguires gold and Zymol in the past. I know there are a ton of products out there, I guess it may be personnel preference.

If the car is parked outside all the time look at Detailer's Poli-Coat or Optimum Car Wax

I agree with Optimum Car Wax. Fast to apply, looks good and has good durability.

Now, if you want to dress it to the nines, Pinnacle Souveran or XMT 180 look really good.

Both vehicles are garage kept, and I have seen a lot on the Pinnacle Souveran , maybe I will try that....Again, thanks for all the advise. If all goes well, I will post pics.

Although carnauba waxes look great after application their durability isn't what I would call stellar. Normally, a few weeks is about it for the majority of wax products.

Since they're daily drivers and not garage queens I would suggest applying a sealant after polishing. There are many great sealants available through Autogeek and these typically provide long lasting protection plus a gorgeous shine.

Once the sealant cures, usually 12 hours, applying a wax like Collinite 845 will add both depth and an extra barrier of protection.. :props:

Some personal suggestions..

Thanks again, that's what I was looking for

Without diverging from your products and approach too much here is what I suggest...

#1 - Wash (avoid wash & wax products)
#2 - Clay
#3 - Inspect the vehicle for swirls and deeper defects such as RIDS
#4 - Based on #3, choose your polish & pad combination; use test spot(s) to validate the combination will produce results to your satisfaction.

Assuming you purchased the 7424XP Light Swirl Remover Kit....

#5 - You would likely use XMT#2 on a white or orange pad first. It's possible you may need to then follow-up with XMT #1 using white or grey. XMT#2 in my experience is not overly aggressive. If you get confused post pictures of any swirling after you complete step 3.
#6 - Apply XMT Carnauba Finishing Glaze with the white pad to deep clean; or grey for a very light cleaning. I recommend white since it is a 2007.
#7 - Top the surfaces with a spray wax; and then maintain the vehicle after every wash with this step.

Every 1-2 weeks you simply wash the vehicle, and after every 4th or 5th wash perform steps #6 and #7. You can apply #6 and #7 by hand since you are maintaining moreso than correcting.

If you want to maximize durability and minimize how many times you bring out the PC7424XP you will need another set of products. If you have other products in your inventory, or preferences for other brands and such.... provide them and I am sure you will receive more feedback. Something close to your approach above without breaking your wallet would be as follows:

Replace #6 with a cleaner/sealant such as Mother's Synwax FX or Meguiars ColorX.
Replace #7 with a finishing wax such as Megs #26 or Mother's Step #3 (both are Carnauba-based) and I know at least one of them come in both liquid and paste forms.

So potentially use the white pad for both the #2 swirl and carnuba finishing glaze? I assume the orange is more aggressive so use the white and check results?

Also the swirls on the Maxima are light with some light surface scratches....
