Hello Autogeekers,
My name is Collyn and as you could probably guess I am new to this site. Although I have a brief professional detailing career, I have always had a passion for automobiles. Beginning with my first car up until now I have always prided myself in taking care of my vehicles.
I had helped out at my fathers car-wash, both tunnel and self service washes for my high school career and college career while having a full-time job and opening my own business. Towards the end of my college career I realized how little of life I was actually living. Between 45-55 hours managing a specialty retail store, another 20-25 co-managing my events facility, and whatever I could afford to give to my education there was almost no time left for my family, let alone friendships. Thus, I sold off my portion of the business, found a less intense job (working at the car washes), and finished out my education.
After recently graduating, having jobs that were lined up disappear, numerous resumes sent out and nothing more than the occasionally rejection email returned I began to realize I needed to do something. Thus, I approached my father with the idea of opening a detail shop at one of the self serve locations he owns. Having experience detailing my own car as well as detailing out of one of our other locations this was a no-brainer for him.
Thankfully, although with little capital to build-out one of the self serve bays into a detail location I was able to strike a deal with my father. I would do all the build-out, purchase all the detailing products, and equipment once I could afford to do so if he supplied the building materials. He didn't mind as the bay was used for storage and if the detail bay didn't work out he would have a great workshop/storage area for whatever he chose to do so.
Thus Duggs Detailing was born.
I recently finished the bay and am in the process of nailing down pricing, signage and promotional material for a grand-opening come early spring with a soft opening once the signs and pricing are figured out.
As far as the business itself, I plan on focusing specifically on production detailing. As much as I enjoy full service, extensive show-room detailing, this location is not located in an area where people will want to pay that type of money or be willing to leave their car for an entire. I expect to do a large number of quick interior details based on the type of clientele that typically use the self serve locations.
As it sits now, everything aside from an extractor and orbital have been installed and purchased. I plan on adding shelving with the next few weeks as well as cleaning up a few small details in the shop because lets face it, its the small stuff detail guys notice!
I am excited to continue referring to this site for ideas and techniques while updating the progress and growth of the business! Feel free to introduce yourselves and maybe leave a few tips for a new detail shop owner!
This was my first customer at Duggs Detailing, a former employer and friend!
This is my own car, done at our original detail location!
And a recent interior clean-up I did at our other detail location!
