New from Missouri, stationed in Okinawa

Mach1USMC- Thanks for the tip on $$... it's just an idea, not sure if i'll do it or not, just would like the extra dough for car parts and traveling. I've been over Foster a bit, but haven't been to the others yet. I heard Kinser has a pretty good shop. All the shops are called Typhoon Motors, correct? Just wondering which one has the best variety of stuff. Kadena doesn't have squat for selection. Maybe i'll catch ya around before you leave. Where ya headed off to after here?

You're very welcome. You can definitely earn some decent cash here, don't get me wrong. Just like everywhere else you have to build your reputation. I started out doing a lot of "grunt" work, mostly maintenance washes and the like. But on a fellow detailers advice I raised my prices and started to be more selective. Since then business has gone really well. One thing I've run into is most customers want interior work - that's not really my thing, plus I don't have a steam cleaner here. If you get a steam cleaner now I promise you'll make your $ back within a couple months if you know what you're doing.

Kinser is closed for renovations now. Foster has the most space and the best facilities, BUT you get a lot of people wanting to stop and talk to you about detailing. It wouldn't be a big deal but the bays cost $3.50 an hr and when you're doing a 1 step correction on a 5 series (for example) that adds up. But most of your customers live near Kadena or Foster. So Foster is most convenient. I've had several recent customers that have their own garage (including an air conditioned one for a F430!!)

Looks like we are headed to Daytona Beach, I'm retiring. It's me, my GF and our dogs. She does all the intrior work but she's back in the states now waiting for me.

Hit me up sometime - I just did a full correction plus interior on an R34 GTR Nismo Edition VSpec. It was a blast. I have a 04 5 series, an R33 GTR, an R32 GTR, and a Fairlady Z (300ZX) coming up. I avg between $50-$75 an hour here. My customers would love someone reliable to go to... if you're interested.

sure i'd love to give it a go, not sure if i'm at your level yet on detailing though. I usually stick my wife on interior too, she does a great job and she can fit in small areas better than me (i'm 6ft, she's 4 11). i'll have to try and get with you before you leave. if anything, be nice to meet another car person, seems there are many here, but they must not meetup anywhere, least not that I know about. would be nice to have a Cars and Coffee here or something of the sort.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but welcome. I'm also a fellow GTR owner in Okinawa. I'm just a hobbyist so I've only been doing personal and friend's cars. I been using the Collinite products from Foster Typhoon on friends cars with great results.

Right on, hope to meet ya sometime. I am still gathering products to do a full out detail of my GT-R, it's in decent, but very neglected condition. And I've had sooooo many problems with it mechanically, I've had it back and forth to the dealer so many times in the last 6 months. I hope I have no more issues with it, it's a fun car to drive, but just such a headache. Hit me up via PM sometime. :xyxthumbs:

I too was in Okinawa 1999-2003, and had a 92 R32 GT-R on Kadena, not sure what problems you are having, but I can get you in contact with one of the guys that knows all the shops on the island, and has a R31 that will understand... I believe he is working on Kinser, but may be working on Foster. Let me know and I can pass on the information if needed...
