Forgive me for saying so, but is this just a different version of the new PC-XP ?

The date of release for this model and the close pricing to the just-released PC-XP leads me to believe this is sort of similar to like what the Meguiars clone is to the older PC machine.

I really like the new Flex, but I'm hung up on the $300 price.

Is there going to be a review on this Model and maybe a comparison to the new PC-XP, coming soon ?

The more time I spend looking through this Forum, the more crazier I get about my Wish-list.

I'm beginning to like this new and improved version of the Griot Buffer and it's more than half the price of my all-time favorite, the Flex !

I noticed for this Griot, there's only 2 different colored Pads sold for it. Can I still use all the other ones out there that are for sale... as long as I keep an eye on the overall size so that I don't edge-grind my Trim, Mirrors, etc.

Does the Griot Buffer do it's magic by using different grades of Liquids rather than using different grades of Foam Pads ?

Again, I sure like the fact that the Flex is a forced orbital... cause in some of the Video's of the economy Buffers, it seems that the Pads sometimes stall in one spot... which should add to the polishing time cause the Pad just sits there and jiggles, rather than rotating around and around.

It seems like I'm just talking to myself, but I will use this thread as my Diary for questions I have about this Griot. Being the weekend, I will be patient for the answers to them.

In my last post, I asked about the Pads and the Liquids used on them.

Ultimately, I want to know if I can attach all the different sizes of Lake Country Pads to this new Griot. Lake Country Buffing Pads, Polishing buffing pads, buffing pads, polishing pads, ccs foam pads, ccs polishing pads

I want to make sure if I got the new Griot, I would have NO regrets about getting it... and then wish I should have gotten the Industry standard, the PC... or spent a few bucks more and got the Flex.

Is the new Griot like the PC-XP in every way... can I use everything that is available for the PC-XP ?

Some may question calling the older PC and now the new PC-XP, the industry standard, but it seems to be what a lot of people have as their workhorse and it doesn't cost twice as much as the others do, for starters.

Thank-you kindly for allowing me to use this as a "Question" Diary.

I guess what absolutely stupid for me right now, is all the choices I have to choose from.

AUTOGEEKS is like a Big Box Store for detailing and it just blows me away when I think of their selection.

I bought a Foam Gun from AUTOGEEKS a while ago, and look forward to making another purchase soon... once I make up my friggen mind !

:buffing:

I currently own a Flex and a PC 7424XP. Our shop-polisher/buffer is the previous 7424 and I've owned the previous-generation Griot's RO (recently sold it). I also have a 3" pneumatic RO for tight work.

I doubt the Griot's is the PC XP re-badged. I think it is a knock-off of the 7424. My experience with the previous generation Griot's was that despite better/similar specs to the 7424, it didn't deliver the performance the 7424 did. It bogged down much more easily. I did like the "basket" handle better than the others (it is the one thing I'd change about the 7424), but in practice it isn't that big a deal. The 7424 felt better and worked better for me.

I think it is worth having both the 7424 and the Flex, but only if you are doing a lot of detailing. I own a company that makes a polish/glaze/wax system, so I spend a lot of time. I prefer the Flex for polishing - it is a much more efficient and powerful tool for that with only minimal risk. It does require a little more attention though. The PC is just easy. I love it for glaze and wax. For polishes it has decent cut with the right pads, and has a huge safety margin. The 7424XP is what I include in my kits, and I'd recommend it to you as a beginner. I'm sure the new Griot's is a decent polisher, too, and should be able to use whatever a PC can as far as backing plates, pads, etc. The new specs sound like they were addressing the bogging thing I saw with mine.

As for your question about the pads, I'm not sure why Griot's doesn't have a more aggressive pad. I think the right pad is a critical match to the liquid you are using. I use a slightly custom version of the LC yellow pad for our most aggressive polish, and an orange one for the medium and fine. A white pad is our glaze (ultra-fine polish with gloss-enhancer) and black pads match our sealant and carnuba wax. Maybe they do it for simplicity. We just put which pad you're supposed to be using right on the label.

My $0.02.

I spoke to Jason about this unit before its official release on site and it sounds like a very hot ticket. I am told it is not a rebadged PC-XP and its much harder to bog the motor versus the original PC. I personally would love to get my hands on this one ... but then again I would like to play with the PC-XP too.

AUTOGEEK... may I request an AUTOGEEK comparison video between the NEW Griot and the NEW PC-7424XP ?

These are good questions. I'd like to know about the LC pad & compatibility, as well. (I would think they'd have to be compatible, as Griot's only has two levels of pad abrasiveness to choose from..................but, then again, maybe not.)

Also, the comparison video, comparo/write-up with pictures, et.al. would be an excellent "tool" for us novices (or anybody else who want's to make an informed decision). How about doing that AG??

See ya :)

Thanks for the frank opinions & input. Appreciate the directness & your recommendations. Very helpful. And, worth way more than just 2 cents!!

I seriously doubt they would give me both units, and dont know I could actually make a video anyhoo. I suspect that once Mike Phillips sets his cap down at AG we "could" see alot of comparisions and other videos.

I am definetely up for testing both machines (note to Meghan) ...:D

I used my Griot's polisher with fine results using Lake Country Pads and the our Polishes/Glaze/Waxes. It has a fairly standard hook and loop backing plate that worked well with the Lake Country pads we put in our kit. Here was a quick pass using the Griot's orbital with the GlossHaus stuff:

(we were playing with water - watching it pool on the "old" paint and run right off the "new")

Here's the good news - you can pretty much sell any of these things used for a high percentage of what you paid. You're likely to get good results with any of them.

For me, the progression to a Flex was natural, but it is worth having the PC around even if I didn't need it for demos, etc.

Net: You aren't likely to go wrong, and you can either double up or get some of your money back later.

I wish this was available sooner, I ordered new unit from Griot's the other day and paid their ridiculous shipping rates.

Anyway ...

I really doubt you'll be unhappy. The specs look strong, and their return policy is really terrific (180 days). I'd appreciate it if you'd post some comments when you get it.

Not only that, but everything they sell has a lifetime guarantee.

That is my expectation (I do have little bit of experience with polishers and suppliers), or otherwise I would not have ordered it, that is not what I was commenting on.

Due to experiences I've had when I did similar stuff before nowadays I leave sales support to those that profit from such effort and do things only for my own pleasure.

The lifetime warranty is with Griot or AUTOGEEK's ?

Is there a warranty on the Griot in Canada, if I buy it from AUTOGEEK's and have it shipped to Canada ?

Is there a warranty on ANY Buffer if I buy it from AUTOGEEK's... and have it shipped to Canada ?

Everybody says contact AUTOGEEK's and they'll make it right. Would I have to ship the Tool back to the USA for repair or replacement ? This added Postage for a repair or replacement, may offset the "Great Deal" in the beginning.

Just wondering... and waiting for Meghan to chime into one of my Topics.

If the specs were right the 7amp motor is much more powerful than the 4.2 pcxp. 7 amps is flex power so for the money it seems to be a winner. The pads from LC in 6.5 will work on the BP sipplied with the Griots polisher.

I will chime on all....:D
Griots products warranty is extended to all of their products whether you buy from us or them. As for if you ship it to Canada I would imagine that Griots would hold you for the shipping fees to them to replace it but would cover sending out the new one to you. And if they don't we will.
