Hi I just purchased a 1972 Pontiac Catalina with original paint and it needs a lot of help, surface rust but ok paint under it,so I have been doing a lot of reading on this site. Very good information out there and I will post questions in the right place but for now just saying Hi and thanks in advance for all the information. Tom

Welcome

Try ironx and a clay bar to remove surface rust. Then polish and wax.

Welcome aboard . I bet you ll have to repaint your Pontiac mate , it s a 72 .

I know repaint is in the near future but just want to get it looking a little better and stop the rust I may just sand it down and spot prime for now

I remember them doing a write up in hot rod where they were trying to maintain an original finish, not necessarily shiny. They used a combination of either steel wool or a green scrub pad and comet. It seems aggressive to me, but it looked like it worked.

It's a 59 300 E, a car my dad and I restored years ago. It's been in the family over 30 years

Hi Tom,

1972 Pontiac Catalina is a very cool car. I had a buddy that had one of these a few years ago, very nice driving car.

I buffed out a 1964 Catalina but it does have a new paint job. It was wiped-out but it's looking good now and winning awards at car shows.
