New Jersey teen cracks iPhone network lock

I'm not sure that I understand the significance of what he did. I take it that it wasn't considered illegal hacking. I take it that the company can't just relock with a new code. What is up with it?

when you buy almost any phone these days, it will have to be unlocked for use. the apple Iphone is only available on the AT&T network but what this kid has done is found a way to unlock it and make it available for use on any and all networks. i see it as a good thing for apple because more people can buy the iphone, but it would hurt AT&T a little bit because people are no longer required ot be on that network to use this phone. plus he's 17 and the first person to be able to hack this new phone which is a crazy piece of technology in itself...and its very expensive so im surprised he would do this to a brand new iphone

the phone was donated, and he receieved donations (as what I read in his blog).

Its kinda useless tho IMO. Unless the carrier has unlimited data plans, a big part of the iphone becomes expensive. The iphone is a heavyyyy data user. Which is why it makes use of an unlimited data plan with att (I think).

Visual voicemail is also a feature ONLY from att right now.

shame the kid could not solve World Peace, or War in Iraq, or the Gas Crisis. While not a criminal, its truly is a shame to see modern children failing to use their talents for a greater good.

That's because it has become unsafe for them to be outside doing what we did as kids. As long as their are whackos like Couey on the streets (who can rot in hell and is going to get what he deserves--BTW), and abductions keep occurring, I believe that my childrens safest place is in the home, where I can see them;) Not saying they don't go outside and play in the yard, but not to the extent I did as a child.

Maybe some business will employ this IPhone cracker and put him to good use of some kind.

i have to disagree kids to go out and play much because there mostly lazy. they would rather play on the computer. my wife baby sitts for a 7 year old and thats all he wants to do . you ask him to go out side and play and hes like naaa im to tired . im like tired. your only 7 you should have a ton of energy to give me that.

I disagree. That is the way that child was brought up by the parents. If that child would have been brought up by the parents riding bikes, walking, going to the park, etc., then they would be more willing AND have more energy. My kids LOVE going outside and doing things, but I'm with them when they do;) I agree that SOME kids are lazy, but I believe it is because that's what the child sees the parents do(on the computer) instead of outdoor activities.

it all comes down to parenting .and how us parents raise them .

Smart kid. Another group came up with a software solution, but unfortunately was hasseled by ATT lawyers.

It sucks, but now instead of them selling it, they'll just probably "leak" it onto the web so everyone will have it for free :)

Nice to see the iPhone set free, even if I'm not going to buy one. I'm guessing computer engineering would be a good place for this kid, or maybe even computer science. Has a good future.

In all fairness, nobody else has managed to achieve such things. George Washington started out as a punk chopping down a cherry tree...

With the amount of folks that have beeen trying to crack that code, I'd say the lad should be recruited by our intelligence community asap

Not to get off-topic, but the cherry tree story is a farce they used to teach kids back in "our day" ;)

Anyway, I'm finding it strange how people are speaking of this guy as if he's some punk kid or criminal? How so? He simply used his talents to help the tech and mobile device enthusiast community.

It's like if a kid created a piece of software that was superior to iTunes to manage his iPod... and then everyone label him a criminal. Huh?

i wouldnt call him a criminal . hes just a computer geek:D who would rather spend all summer in his bedroom playing with his phone instead of being outside and enjoying the summer like everyone else
