New M3/M4 announced

I'm sure there's some room for increased boost with a simple piggyback upgrade, but not much. Turbochargers are probably closer to their theoretical max than say a 335i with a stock boost of ~8psi.

That's what I'm thinking. I'm sure it's more maxed out than mine. My 335i is 8.8 psi max. That's on the n54. With any good tune that goes to 13-14 psi depending on company. The new M may only have a smaller increase in boost from a tune.

We will have to wait and see what the tuners do. Would love to see COBB get into this chassis.

never selling it boss ;) i have an m3 collection going
The big uncertainty for me is the turbocharged power plant. I don't care for the way the 335i drives (had a E46 M3 prior), and so far the F80 M3 seems like a fixed up 335i with a modified N54 engine. A test drive and reviews will determine if i buy new or used.

I think all M3 enthusiasts are skeptical of new model year upgrades.

E30 to E36 - Why do we only get 240hp
E36 to E46 - Too heavy
E46 to E9x - Way too heavy
E9x to F8x - Step in the right direction with weight but way in the wrong direction with a turbocharged engine.

Every new M3 brings better performance, can't deny that.

I wasn't trying to say good gains won't come out of it, just to not expect n54 gains. maybe a little below or right at m5/m6 gains? who knows we'll find out when they hit the market.

also i'm curious as to how a company can have a development tune for an engine that hasn't even hit the market. i'm not trying to argue with you i'm just asking. the biggest bmw tuners i would assume would have a head jump on tuning this car and no offense but ETG isn't one of them. not saying they are bad or anything, but there are a handful of well established tuners/companies that already exist.

ETG is a reputable company. A lot of these big tuners are very well connected with each other and often share. Jags is on very good terms with (for example renntech) everyone who actually makes proprietary software, not private labelled stuff (cough* MHP *cough) You also need to understand there a lot of these companies get software direct from Germany, live transfer, not buying a car and tuning it. I know a little more in depth how they do AMG (studied up about M156 tuning) but BMW has similar processes with regards to how they get there stuff.

Anything that has a FI can be easily tuned. Car is going to be a ball with a tune. Tuning is more than just power gains, it's all about changing the cars drivability.

awesome thanks for explaining that. i guess i should have rephrased what i was trying to say in that don't expect huge gains like the n54 just because i feel that bmw has learned their lesson, but who knows tuners could possibly make that happen since the market for m3's is so huge. you're also right, it isn't always about hp gains, there's alot more to a tune than just the power gains. it transforms the car

you defined the transitions pretty well i would say. it's funny though because at the beginning of every new generation people complain about this or that but at the end of that same generation you will hear long live the x generation. i started with the e90 and loved it. got an e36 for the daily and it's been 6 months and i love this car more and more everyday. the e90 is luxurious, a beast with power, and lightning quick shifts with the dct. BUT the e36 is just something else. the simplicity is the beauty of it. like you said im waiting to drive the new m3 for myself because i feel like bmw's weight reduction program will make this car a winner. only time will tell, but overall this car will be awesome

Well companies are trying to make their cars "untunable". Usually thru the encryption. Dodge/Lexus have stupid encryption; 256 rolling bit (bank software pretty much). Took 4 years to crack a bunch of their stuff. Really a company will invest in breaking the codes if they see a return. For example the GTR was untunable, but they cracked the software and wrote new stuff in a year! My Lexus RX on the other will never see a tune because there is no market for it. AMG makes it more difficult by rolling out new software and codes every year. Also you can't OBD2 flash the new M157, to flash the ECU takes a master. But anyways going back to the M3, I see an awesome potential for it!!
