New Paint and Products I want to use...

Mike....

I'm about to go to work on a brand new Corvette that is Elkhart Lake Blue.

I'm thinking Sonax Perfect Finish and topped with Backfire SiO2. Are these two products compatible....do I need a wipe down with something like Gyeon Prep before I apply the Backfire?

Your thoughts and suggestions would be most welcome.

Also, what is your thought on going over vinyl graphics as my car has the red hash marks and the white center stripe.

Technically, SONAX Perfect Finish is formulated for and intended to be used with a rotary buffer. But I've had good luck using it with orbitals.


For most products like this it's a good idea to chemically strip the paint before applying any brand of coating after using most compounds and polishes. It's just a good practice. The idea is to remove any polishing oils off the paint surface left by the polish. The GYEON Prep is very good.


I think it would be perfectly okay for glossy or shiny vinyl graphics. It would probably be okay for matte or dull vinyl graphics but you would have to do some testing first.

Thanks Mike....yes, planning on Blackfire SiO2.....I really like this product. I will be using a Flex 3401 and a Rupes Mini for the Sonax Perfect Finish. Since the paint is new I was going to use a finishing pad with the Sonax. I also have CarPro Essance in my cabinet....I could use this instead of the Sonax....or I'm totally open to you for the polishing part of it. I also have McKeys Jeweling wax which I could use....could I top that with Backfire SiO2? Thanks in advance for your help. Jim

The way you determine which product and which pad is to do a Test Spot. I've been detailing cars all my life and you never get so good that you don't need to do a Test Spot. I just had a 3-day class here and one coming up in Texas in a few weeks and one of the "Best Practices" I drive home with the students is to always do a Test Spot. Then inspect the results and go from there.

If you're not sure how to do a Test Spot - watch this video as it will clearly show you what to do and I'll explain "why" you're doing it.

McKee's Jeweling Wax is a one-step cleaner/wax, (I coined the term Jeweling Wax for the industry), and it's a very good product. I personally believe you can top a cleaner/wax and/or jeweling wax with this product and there won't be a performance issue. That said, some will disagree and say to NOT use any wax before applying an SiO2 product and also to go to the extent as to chemically strip the paint after using any polish and/or compound and polish process to remove any polishing oils.

Also - just because the car is brand new (new paint), that doesn't automatically mean it's defect-free.

I recently detailed a brand new 2019 Corvette Stingray and it had light contamination. No problem I used some detailing clay and clayed the paint and this removed it. And swirls can be a problem if the dealership washed it a few times.

Thanks Mike.....I really appreciate your input. I will be doing the chemical decon, mechanical with Nanoskin, light polish, wipe down, then for the final steps....I'm still thinking after reading your comments....! Love your work...you've helped me so much over the years by watching your videos and reading your comments. Thanks for all you do for us detail nuts out here!

How is that working backwards? It’s only removing polishing oils. It won’t hurt if the paint if it is wiped down prior to applying a wax, sealant or coating.

I’m not going to get into an argument or debate with you about this but a majority of posts on this forum are an opinion. Just the way it is in the forum world.

To the op you will be fine if you prep wipe prior to applying BF SiO2. Mike gave you excellent advice.
 
I was going to suggest to OP to use the Essence you have, it will be the most compatible with BF SiO2 and I would expect a shiny blue emerald results from using these together. Just my thoughts though... you can make any of those combos work.
 
It seems like you will be doing this thorough. This is just an IF you don't get where you want with finishing pad and Perfect Finish. You can go up in aggressiveness of the pad as Perfect Finish has quite decent cut. And if this is the case and the aggressive pad leaves a little micro marring after it. You can use Carpro Essence on a finishing pad to finishing your work. If you after wipe off the Essence leaves it over night you don't need to be doing a panel wipe product wipe down before application of the Blackfire SiO2. Some does this either way to get a spotless clean surface to apply the next product on Essence. If just useing Perfect Finish I would be doing a panel wipe product wipe down. It's just cause of the SiO2 is not so fond of polishing oils to bond through or over them. Most parts will bond from the BF SiO2 but maybe the SiO2 will not bond so hard so you getting problems with the longevity from it.

Thank you. I appreciate the compliment. I was thinking just this morning about how many people I've helped over the decades to polish their toys. I have no hard number but a LOT.

So I appreciate it anytime someone gives due credit where credit is due, something I have practiced all of my life.
