New porter cable 7424 tips needed

Ok guys I just bought a porter cable 7424 and Pinnacle XMT cleaners and polishers. I'm new at this but figure w/ a little practice I could do as good a job as most people around. Here’s the deal I’m going to practice on a buddies S-10 this weekend. Its dark blue so I should get some good experience. Here’s the order.

1. wash
2. use xmt fine swirl remover 2 (orange pad)
3. ultra fin swirl remover 1 (white pad)
4. carnauba finishing glaze (bonnet)


What speeds should I use for each step?
My other option is Zaino PC Fusion w/ orange pad maybe.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Apply the product to the pad, spread it on the panel with the machine off, turn it on and work it in on the area on speed 3 to get even coverage (quick pass) and then bump up to speed 5 or 6 (I rarely turn it off speed 6) and then let the product do the work. Remember to move the machine slowly, keep it flat on the surface and don't apply a lot of pressure. On XMT1 you can use even less pressure and speed 5. Apply the glaze with another polishing pad or finishing pad if you have it ... I wouldn't apply it with a bonnet ... use speed 3-4 with that. Also, the glaze isn't a good LSP (last step product) so you'll need to apply a wax over that for protection. Let me know if this was confusing at all :).
 
Speed 6 for polishes. Speed 5 will be fine for glaze. And you need to put something on top of the glaze.

Here's the order: wash-clay-polish-protect
If your buddies car has never been clayed then you should do this before using your PC 7424.
My experience with XMT 2 and XMT 1 is that they are so close in cut that either will finish ready for wax. I only use XMT 1 after a more agressive polish.
Speeds for your PC; spread at 2-3; kick up to 5-6.
 
You guys are great. I dought his truck has ever been washed in 5 years. lol That was what i needed to hear Im going to give it a shot on his a maybe a couple of other willing people before I move on to my Vette. I have LCC pads. Does my pad choices look ok Orange for xmt 2 then maybe a white or blue for the glaze? :cheers:
 
If his car hasn't been washed in 5 years you'll need to clay it :P Claybars remove contaminents from the paint to make it smoother so the surface is prepped for polishing.

XMT 2 = Orange - Put some polish on the pad and without turning the machine on spread it over the area, then turn it on to speed 3-4 and spread it evenly. Then turn it onto speed 6, go nice and slow. Use moderate pressure. Moving too fast won't help you at all, and you won't see any results. Move at about an inch a second, work it in till you see your desired result ( about 2-3 minutes )

XMT 1 = White - This will remove any hazing/micromarring left from a more abrasive polish. Put some polish on the pad and without turning the machine on spread it over the area, then turn it on to speed 3-4 and spread it evenly. Then turn it onto speed 6. Because your not doing as much correction the movement can be ABIT faster and you won't need to apply as much pressure. Work it in till you see your desired result ( about 2-3 minutes )

XMT Glaze = Blue - Shake the bottle very very well. If you don't it will be very running and most likely the pad will just absorb it. Shake it till its thick. Spread it over the area, then turn the pc onto speed 3 and evenly spread it. Then turn the PC onto speed 5 and work it in. No pressure is needed because your not doing any correction. Once you have glazed the whole car, then you can buff it off with a MF towel or a MF bonnet.

I want to thank everyone for the advise. This should be fun! Sorry if I ask questions that have been answered b4. just a couple more questions???

1. what is the 50/50 water and ISO used for?

2. Can I use Zaino z2 or z5 after the glaze for a wax or should I just purchase a good carnuba wax?

The alcohol and water solution is to remove oils from polish, it will also remove any fillers that a product has in it. For example, XMT 360 has a significant amount of fillers in it. It WILL hide more things then it corrects. So, you "polish" with 360, then wipes off with 50/50 ISO thus removing fillers and youll see what was removed and what was covered up by fillers.

Im not too familiar with Zaino products. But you have to be careful using a glaze with Carnauba under a sealant. Most of the times the Carnauba will cause bonding problems.
 
Ok I will just go pick up some Zymol for his truck. I also noticed that his truck has pin stripping that was put on at the dealer will buffing take this off or will I be ok?

I dont think an alcohol wipe down would work with 360, the fillers would get sealed.
