Hello all! Not a detailing noob, but I haven't had a light colored DD in so long I don't have a "protocol" down for it! It's probably been at least 15 years. I don't usually go for light colored cars, I like depth in my paint. However, model and options won over color and hopefully by Saturday I will have an 05 Forester in Platnium Silver.

So this is my thought (the paint is not neglected but most likely not polished, etc-if anything, hand waxed with turtle wax otherwise probably run through the local car wash). It does have a shine and seemed to bead (light rain a little before we looked at the car).
Wash (I have GC wash as well as the pink stuff from Megs-Soft Wash? I can't remember the name)
Clay
Ultimate Polish
NXT
(cure)
Top NXT with Collinite 476

This is a DD and I hate to admit but I don't know it I'll have the time to dedicate to a good detailing as often as I'd like. I think the Collinite has the best protection out there but am open to thoughts. Will the layer of NXT really make much difference with the silver color, when topped by the Collinite? I used to use the deep crystal polish (this was before the "ultimate" line) and NXT on a yellow show car but because it wasn't a DD and was garage kept I never worried about topping/longevity/durability like I will have to with this one (which won't be garage kept).

It sounds like a good plan to me, except I'd say pick one wax or the other.

Give it a good polish to give it some extra gloss. Save your clear coat and don't go crazy trying to remove every scratch since silver really doesn't show them well anyway.

Collinite products are said to have great durability. I doubt you will gain anything with looks or durability by topping it. I believe it is said that sealants tend to be preferred for silver for looks.

845 always looked good on Silver for me. Very bright look, with good protection

TY! I was planning to top the NXT with the Collinite. I've topped GC before with Collinite on a darker colored DD, since I think the GC really makes darker metallics shine but wanted more durability since it wasn't garage kept. I think it added a bit, using the GC, but I wasn't sure if the NXT would do much for the silver (because it is silver).

I am definately not fussing over light swirls, etc because it is silver. I figure it could use a good polish to feed it though, because I bet at 11 years old it's getting dry!

I was picking the 476 over the 845 for two reasons-it's paste (I just don't like liquid wax) and supposedly it's the more durable of the two. I'll be using it on our two daily drivers (neither garage kept) and need something that can make it through winter and drive through car washes (touchless!).

I think I would't waste the time with NXT and just do the collinite.

:iagree:

Collinite waxes are really durable and look very good. No sense in adding a step you don't need.

Sweet, thanks all! I was really not sure if the NXT was worth it, I'll save the $$ I was going to spend on that and use it towards other detailing stuff.

Now the hard part-waiting (on weather good enough to do this in)!

I like megs gold class carnuba wax on my silver metallic paint.

I like it better than Collinite and others
