Hi Folks

I am new to machine polish and had just ordered my CSC pad from AG and awaiting for the shipment.

This will be my first time using a machine on the ride. Before joining AG - I apply AIO and Sealant on the ride by hand.

I am using a Bosch random orbital with 5" plate and have got CSC 6.5" pad.

While awaiting for the shipment to arrive I have been planning how should i use machine for applying AIO and sealant on this ride.

Attached it the area which i think is very challenging ( it is not a flat surface) being a greenhorn. Should I jus skip this area and use hand instead. ?? But I will never know till I try.

any extra care or guidence on this area during machine polish will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Guys!

Welcome to the site. What color pad did you buy? Is it just 1 pad or did you buy more than one pad? I have to question whether a Bosch Random Orbital polisher will have enough speed, power or orbits per minute to really do much good.? Does the Bosch polisher have a hook and loop backing plate in which to attach the pad to? Where is your location, here in the U.S.A. or overseas? Here in the states the only Bosch random orbital polishers I have seen would be too underpowered to really do any paint correction. Can you attach a photo of the Bosch polisher?

Areas like you have highlighted on your photo can surely be machine polished an long as you make sure there is no way that the backing plate of your polisher can make contact with the paint. It sounds like you have that aspect covered as your machine has a 5" plate being used with a 6.5" pad. If the Bosch is an inexpensive auto parts store or department store machine it likely won't have enough power to really do any good.

I realize that I ask many questions but if answered then maybe we can give you better answers.

Hi thanks for ur reply!
I am from Singapore. I have ordered 6 pad set- orange/green/blue/red/golden. The Bosch model is GEX 125. I failed to read more in AG prior to the purchase of the machine. The original intention of machine polish is to replace hand application of AIO and sealant. So that i can achieve a more even coat and speed things up. Hence I assume that the Bosch is what I need. As I am new to machine I do not intent or rather not ready for paint correction and swirl removal . Reason being -Having fear that I may destroy the paint. This is way I end up with Bosch. You are right I think this machine can't do much for paint . correction. Perhaps when I am more experience I will look out for a DA. Guess this was wat most newbies have to go thru... :)

yeah that sander is not going to help you really, i would just get a true d/a polisher as it will probably just vibrate once you put a pad+pressure on it.might be useful if you need to damp/wet sand but that's probably it for that machine. why not return the sander and use the money for a true d/a?. anyways good luck

Hi Terentius,

The first thing you want to do is to test out the machine and see what kind of power it has.

Place a mark on your backing plate like this,

BlackMarkOnBackingPlate.jpg

Place a foam pad on the backing plate and then place some product onto the face of the pad, next place the pad flat against a panel like the hood or trunk lid and turn the tool on.

If you want to remove swirls and scratches you need to see the pad rotating with downward pressure applied. If your Bosch Orbital Wood Sander will not maintain pad rotating under pressure you won't be able to remove swirl and scratches.

If the pad just vibrates or jiggles against the paint with the tool turned on then you can use this tool to spread out a coat of wax but it's not going to remove any paint thus it's not going to remove any swirls and scratches as removing swirls and scratches mean leveling the surface.

Makes sense?

There are a lot of orbital wood sanders on the market but the majority of them only have enough power to rotate a thin sanding disc, not a thick, or even thin foam pad.

First see if your orbital sander will do as I state above, if it will rotate a pad under pressure then we'll see if it will maintain pad rotation when buffing on a curved panel.

The correct size backing plate for 6.5" pads is a 6" backing plate. You can try using the 5" backing plate but there won't be equal pressure applied to the outer edges of the foam pad.

Here's a short video clip I made to show you what you need your Bosch tool to do if you want to remove swirls and scratches.

Hi Dave here is the PIC and the SPEC of the sander.

-No-load speed
7500 - 12000 rpm

-Orbital stroke rate
15000 - 24000 opm

-Velcro-type fastening

Hi Mike

Thanks alot for all your guidence these few days! Greatly appreciated. I think my order is in transit to the US freighter and should take another 5-8 days to ship to my country. Cant wait to try it out.

But I think most likely I will need to get a DA and some 5.5 inch pads. ( waiting for next promotion/discount) and will also be exploring drop ship directly from AG to my country directly rather then going thru another logistic. Hopefully save some $. AG is so addicitve.

As I have ordered Klasse AIO and Sealant. I will stick to this product for now - till I get my basic right.]

Thanks for your time! :)

you will be waiting a little while for a promotion/discount for a polisher, most of AG's promotions don't include polishers/polisher kits but i think they cover pad kits.i know you can order DA polishers from china(look exactly like most DA's sold for detailing) for 25-35$ but you need to buy 50-100 of them lol. best option would be just order a nice polisher kit for $170usd-$200usd from AG and you should have enough pads to do the work you need to do and all you should need is product.

Hi, Terentius:

If you can afford it, it is easier if you get a dedicated DA polisher like the Porter Cable unit and a wide selection of pads (two of each type if you can swing it). Sonus makes a good pad cleaning soap called Der Wunder Wash but you can clean the pads with soap solutions you prepare yourself. Just remember to keep your polisher moving on the panel, and you will have a hard time messing up the paint with a DA polisher. Not kidding here. You can learn as you use it.

I paid $130usd for the Bosch :( ( already burnt out all my budget this round). I believe Porter Cable is around the price range. But unfortunately it is 110v my country power require 220-240v.

Thanks for uploading the image. I really doubt that that machine is going to do anything more than just vibrate the pad on the paint and with a really small orbit stroke at that. Most of the orbit stroke will likely be absorbed by the foam of the pad leaving zero to little action against the paint. Try it out and see what it does but I have a feeling you will have better results working by hand. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. On a positive note, you'll never know until you try it out.

Thanks for the feedback..Appreciated. Am learning everyday. The predecessor of this machine was Bosch Gex 270AE. It seems to be a very popular machine and was recommended for amature in my country or rather in Asia.(goggle and u will know wat I meant) Guess that is why I bought it without hesitation sigh... Jus wasted my money. Hopefully when the pad arrive I can try it out. Hope it will at least aid the LSP process.
