I received my first buffer when I was 16 years old as a Christmas gift from my parents. It was a Craftsman buffer with an 8 inch pad ( not interchangeable) so I would use applicator bonnets and terry cloth bonnets to remove the wax. Speaking of wax, that’s primarly what I used it for.
After reading posts on GarageJournal and other forums, I decided to step up my game and get a DA polisher. In fact today I unpacked my new PC 7424 XP. I am looking forward to using it for the first time soon. However I do need some advice on products.
I am from Minnesota, home of 3M. So needless to say their products are in just about every auto parts store around. I have always used 3M’s compound, Hand Glaze, and Perfect-It wax.
After researching 3M products, I came up with my shopping list. Here is what I am thinking about purchasing:
• 3M Perfect it Machine Polish
• 3M Perfect it Ultrafine Machine Polish
• 3M Perfect it Foam Pad Polish
• 3M Hand Glaze
• 3M Perfect it Show Car wax
After watching the DVD, reading Mile Phillips Show Car book, reading how to articles, etc., I noticed that hardly anyone uses 3M products to detail their cars, but rather Wolfgang or Pinnacle . I am left with a few questions.
I’ll post pics later tonight when I have the polisher put together.

- What are the pros and cons of using 3M products?
- If detailers are not using 3M products then why are the body shops using 3M products?
- What would you recommend as an economical alternative to the shopping list/workflow above?
- What are the advantages to using Wolfgang or Pinnacle vs. 3M?
I’ll post pics later tonight when I have the polisher put together.
