LOL, that is pretty damn funny.

But yeah, I did some reading on that. It's the CARS program - Cash Allowance Rebate System, from the government. You just trade in any old car and you'll get $4,500 off the sticker price of the new vehicle you want to purchase.

I was thinking that maybe it's not a bad idea to buy some crap car off eBay for like a couple hundred dollars and then trade it in for the $4,500 for the purchase of a new car if you don't have any vehicle you would like to trade in.

I beleive you have to have the car titled for at least one year and cannot simply go out and buy a POS then trade it in.

Is that Harris Ford in WA?

It is really not as easy as they make it seem. The car must get a combined MPG rating of less then 18 MPG for a truck and 22MPG for a car, and must be titled and insured for the past year. Also, any car traded in for the cash for clunkers MUST be crushed or the dealership faces some pretty heavy penalties.

Sounds like a great deal for someone that has an old beat up car that is horrible on gas and wants a new car, but then again, most people in that situation that have the money for a newer / better car would probably already have one.

Funny thing is that both of the cars in that dumpster will not qualify for the bill....

Check this page out, Cash for Clunkers | Car Allowance Rebate System | What To Do

Eligible Clunkers (your trade-in):

  • Manufactured less than 25 years before the date you trade it in
  • A "new" combined city/highway fuel economy of 18 miles per gallon or less
  • Be in drivable condition
  • Continuously insured and registered to the same owner for the full year preceding the trade-in
  • The trade-in vehicle must have been manufactured not earlier than 25 years before the date of trade in and, in the case of a category 3 vehicle, must also have been manufactured not later than model year 2001Offer valid from date of bill signed.

Isn't this program being funded by government stimulus money?

If it ain't a Ford it's a clunker.

Why aren't you driving one?

That pic is hilarious.

We got a '92 Crown Vic in January, which would have qualified, but the time owned requirement leaves us out.

I don't understand the timing of this program: the program only runs until November (or until the money runs out), so any cars purchased will have already been built, so it does nothing to stimulate auto manufacturing, only auto dealers. My guess is the majority of the cars purchased will be imports, not American, so it does nothing for Ford, Chrysler, or Government Motors. If they wanted to really help they would ramp this up in a few months when the US manufacturers are in a better position to have their models in good supply.
Your tax dollars at work!

If the vehicles being bought are American made it stimulates them. They run low on inventory and need to replenish, All I see advertised on tv is by American manufacturers. We have a lot of foreign car commercials but not targeted at clunker deals.

Good advertising campaign! That would definitely get my attention and I would probably tell my friends locally.

Foreign cars are eligible for the rebate. So.......government money is going directly to another country, even though the government has bailed out two major domestic companies?

I wish they would lower taxes and reduce the size of the government instead of increasing my taxes to pay for something Congress dreams up and needs to create a department to oversee it.

Sad.

Ha Ha! I live in the area, I had to drive by there just to see it.
